Re: Maybe some Liberals are Awakening

Maher correctly points out that while not all muslims are terrorists, the vast majority of terrorists are muslims. Sure, most aren't blowing anyone up, but he's right, there hasn't been a strong denunciation of terroristic activity by the rest of the population, and when you see majorities of the po...

Looking for someone to start dog WI/MN/IL

Hello I'm trying to find someone in WI, MN or IL (in order of preference) who can take my 18 month old male beagle and get him more experience, some training, and hopefully he'll be a much better rabbit dog when I pick him up 4-6 weeks later. He's a good dog, with excellent blood, very gentle and ha...

Re: Any tips for increasing hunt in a dog?

How much experience does he have? What kind? If the previous owner was running him in a pack, that's probably your problem. He just doesn't know what to do, he's looking to the lead dog to provide guidance. You just happen to be the lead dog currently. Congrats! How long have you had him? It s...

Re: can you train a dog to be solo if so how

The dogs I've started have all started solo. I think it's the best way to determine if the dog has the traits and skills you want. I don't know that letting the dog loose for it to hunt at it's leisure is the best way, but it sure seems to work. I start my dogs like this: first a wild rabbit in a ca...

Re: Finally Trapped a Rabbit!

Well, I got her back. I ended up walking back into the briars until it started being more scrubby little tree clumps (I'm not sure what they are, they grow everywhere, in clumps usually, and really thick, with really brittle branches and at their tallest, maybe 10, 15 feet, most not more than penny ...

Finally Trapped a Rabbit!

Well, went out at 11:45 to take the dogs out before going to bed, and walked back to check the trap I've been trying to get a rabbit in for almost 2 weeks. I've been seeing tons of rabbits in my yard and in the briars behind that, but nothing in my trap. First I thought it was maybe the trigger, it ...

Re: Best all around Gundog bloodline

When I was in highschool, a guy down the road had a beagle he let run. He didn't have any sense of property boundaries of course, so there was a time I was out hunting and he sort of came with. He wouldn't come to me, but he'd work along with me a bit, and I shot a rabbit with his help. I dunno if h...

Re: How to Judge a hounds performance

Top side he's GB Pawking x GB Sandi for grandparents and on the bottom he's got FC Buckeye Ninja Blue Boy x Blueberry Knoll Ava for grandparents. Good blood, certainly. I'm not running him with her at all. I don't want her teaching him any of her moronic traits. I won't run him with another dog unti...

Re: How to Judge a hounds performance

That's very helpful. Thanks! Is there any sort of document written about this sort of thing? I would assume so, but Google isn't helping me, surprisingly. Tonight after I finally found my dog after she went hunting without me (away from home she stays close, out back here, though, she'll go anywhere...

Re: The Gray Scale

Excellent! That's more or less what I was talking about in systematizing the process, though I'd add many additional data points. I don't think it's as simple as a scale though. I could easily see reasons why a dog that didn't meet the standard in some areas would still be bred because he had excess...

How to Judge a hounds performance

Does anyone have a good resource for someone interested in getting into field trialing and wants to learn how to judge a dogs performance? I can tell if my dog is following a trail well, but I'm unfamiliar with the finer points of judging a dogs performance. In the past I've been happy if my dog fol...

Re: out of state deer hunters

Yeah, same as Wisconsin. I imagine it's more or less the same everywhere, at least until someone develops a Hooked On Phonics for Beagles. In WI if a dog is running deer it can be shot, but only by a Warden.

Re: out of state deer hunters

Well it may not be legal, but if you're not on the land yourself, you're not trespassing. I don't now how it is where you guys are, but around here cranberry companies own lots of land that's basically public. One tract I know of regularly has three or four bow hunters. It's not public land but it's...

First Hunt

Well, I went out today for my first rabbit hunting of the season. I took both dogs. Blue, not quite 12 weeks kept up real good for the three hours I had him running. And we didn't see a single thing. Not a squirrel, not a grouse, not a deer. Certainly no rabbits. Just a few bluejays. Seemed like a g...

Re: The complete hound

Harner, I had to do it that way . I understand it was a very simple thing, But one of my friends on this board just wasn't able to grasp it and I had to break it down for him. Do you know if John Monkman is consulting the scientific community before he makes any breeding decisions. I understand he ...
