Re: Tore up feet!
I see you're from Alaska, so you could try to get some of the Pink Ointment they use for sled dogs feet. I know they sell it in a Vet's office in Anchorage (and probably more places there). Another thing to try is EMT Gel, as it's supposed to work miracles. For sure, you'll have to lay him up for a ...

Re: Pups ate Insulation
I've read where styrofoam coffee cups left in the woods will kill hare and rabbits, because it bungs them up inside. I'd expect the same could happen to pups if they ate enough. I found that hounds (adults and pups) always seem to want to scratch or chew plywood or wood if there is styrofoam beneath...

Re: GreenBay Shooter
When Shooter ran in Canada (4 firsts and one 2nd) Chris Pawson judged him and told me, he was probably the best male he'd ever seen run. He said, he wasn't fast, and there were faster hounds in each class, but he took the turns like a trolley car on rails, and then guess who was in front? Supposed t...

Re: looking for 13in male
If I was looking for a 13" male, I'd contact Paul Pazienza (Armando's Beagles) in Ontario. Paul has been tearing up our circuit for many years in the 13" classes, and more than a few times, his hounds win both 13" classes. He's usually got quite a few hounds (maybe 25?), and I believe he just finish...

Re: Best Time of Year to Start Pups?
If I have my choice, I like starting them in the Winter, on fresh snow. (I'm from Ontario, Canada) If they run well on snow when they're still pups (5-7 months) I figure I'll have a decent snow hound when next Winter rolls around. Also, it's fun to watch and listen when Spring comes and the pups rea...

Re: Beans
At a Derby trial one time we were working the hounds. The entire gallery was there when a hare jumped up in front of the hounds. Mine was out front and so intent on catching the hare, he forgot to tongue. The hare hit a rail fence and went through it. I was embarrassed at my hound’s lack of tongue s...

Re: Does Ear infection affect running
I was running my FTCH Winterborne Boomerang in trials a long time ago. He got second in one and the judge told me he'd have won it, except for the fact that when the two judges were trying to separate the top two hounds, they watched two checks and Boomer stood for a few seconds and shook his head, ...

Re: AKC Judging Question
It's pretty common that these powerhouse type of hounds often score a lot, and because they're really in the thick of things at the front, they make mistakes. To me, accomplishment is the main objective, but when (in your opinion as a judge) their demerits finally outweigh their merits, then pick th...

Re: equimax question
I've used it successfully for about a year now. It's worked perfectly the first time I've seen signs of tape, and has only needed one treatment. I had a hound sent to me that had tape pretty bad. I got him on a Thurs. and treated him Fri. and he won a LPH trial on the Sunday, so it didn't affect him...

Re: Brankos Speedy Devil
No, Speedy Devil never finished. I believe she did get one win though in a CKC trial. She was (as the name implies) wickedly fast, but had developed the bad habit of swinging wide (and ahead) to try and catch the hare. She was actually pretty increadible to watch run, until you saw her make her swin...

Re: rabbit trappin
Try 7 grain brown bread along with apples in your traps. I think you'll find a big improvement in your catches. I know it sounds silly, but I've told this to a few guys and they were pleasantly surprised when they finally started to catch rabbits and hare. Best thing is to bait your traps in the eve...

Re: Feeding dogs bones?
I don't think it's worth taking a chance by feeding bones. If you have a couple (or more) kenneled together, it'll cause fights. In my 40 plus years of keeping hounds, I've only had problems maybe 3 times with bones or bone splinters stuck in the hounds throat, but that's 3 times too many, consideri...

Re: Getting paint off a dog
I've found the best stuff is a product called "Undress". It can be bought at Co-ops and is used to clean and groom horses. Work it in, and the paint softens as you do it, then wipe off everything with paper towels. The sooner you do it after the hound is picked up the better it works. An old stand b...

Re: pedigree of fc
Just one thing I can see wrong with your pedigree, and that's IFC BRANKO'S CITY STREAKER was not an IFC. I know that he never finished in Canada (because I trialed him here), and I'm not sure about what he did in the USA. Did Copper Boy finish as an IFC? I know he finished in Canada, but not sure ab...

Re: let them run pregnant or not?
In the past, I've run them up till a couple of weeks before whelping, with the thought in mind that they'd be in better physical shape to more easily have the pups. Lately, I've reconcidered, and thought of all the pet type dogs that seem to have less trouble whelping than some of my hounds and with...
