Re: Bad scenting conditions
We fid it often too. Dogs get 'em up and lose 'em after a short run. Small/young, bred does, poor scenting, run right to the hole, who knows. The long races make up for it.

Rabbit/Deer Camp Stew
The thought of making food after coming in wet and cold after a morning's hunting leaves a lot to be desired. What if a hot stew was already when you came in? Easy Oven Stew 1-1/2 Pounds of beef stew meat or get a roast and cut up yourself 1 cup diced celery (2-3 stalks) 6-8 carrots cut in chunks 4-...

Frame that picture and hang it in his room. My granddaughter is getting interested in hunting. Last year she went to a couple of trials with me. She's 11, but I can't wait to get her out. She needs to learn to shoot first but I have a little 870 28 gauge she can use. Congrats to both of you.

My wife bakes them for an hour and a half and then browns them in a cast iron skillet. Pretty simple and darn good.

Re: short but awesome hunt sons first rabbit
I tagged along with my dad and two uncles every Saturday and Sunday growing up. They just had hounds but they sure could run rabbits. Once I got old enough to carry a gun, Dad let me use his Model 12 and he used a .22 single shot. He always worried about the range. I don't remember when I killed my ...

Never have but don't think I would. If they want to raise a litter they should get their own female or buy the entire litter. Just MHO.

Feeding Before Running/Hunting
I usually don't feed my dogs before a run, hunt or trial. What is the majority opinion? One of my dogs gets motion sickness so for her it's a no brainer. I usually feed them a cup-and-a-half in the morning and another 3/4 cup at night. Sometimes a little more if they've run every day all week. Thanks.

Re: deer breaking
I had a similar situation yesterday. Dog barked once on a deer trail and I had just jumped a rabbit in the vicinity--dog was running another rabbit at the time. I yelled at him once and he cut into the low brush so I'm assuming a rabbit ran the deer trail. I'm still not confident they won't run a de...

Re: garmin ?
I have a 220 with two DC 30s and two DC 40s. Mine track well over 400 yards. I tracked my setter at 750 yards on the power line. I agree in thick cover, they lose signal, especially pine plantations and corn fields. I could always tell when my dogs were barking "hole." Their voice got muffled and I ...
