Re: Run to catch

I know this is a rabbit / beagle site but I also realize that an awful lot of beaglers have also kept the big tree hounds. When I first moved to Tn. an older beagler I met at the trials told me that "most beaglers around here used to be coon hunters or chicken fighters before they got old" LOL. I ke...

Re: Run to catch

Hey Dan.No, I don't think you or John were trying to make me feel guilty. When my dogs catch a rabbit maybe I should say that I don't feel guilty as much as I feel bad that that game little rabbit won't run again. But then again............... I was just thinking back to many years ago coon hunting w...

Re: Run to catch

I guess maybe I should feel guilty letting my dogs pound the rabbit so hard that they catch him.But I don't! Guess I feel it is the ultimate dog vs rabbit test. The rabbit is in control of where he goes ,what he does and if he seeks refuge or not. I've heard that in England they never carry shotguns ...

Re: Run to catch

Jackson Boys Excellent post and very informative! I don't own a Garmin so have no idea about distances run. Guys I run with up north on hare use them and it's always pretty interesting to see distances on a particular hare or how many miles they ran at the end of the day. I know a lot depends on the...

Re: Run to catch

I know some have mentioned catching them on the jump but I was talking about when they run them down / overtake the rabbit either by speed, stamina, relentless pressure, etc.

Re: Time to move on, training area.

Here in Tn. I'm fortunate that I have quite a few places to run the hounds year round but much fewer places to gun them.Have a lot of state land fairly close by and the running is always pretty good there until after season opens .Then they get pounded pretty hard and it seems every body wants to ki...

Run to catch

How many of you have hounds that frequently run down their rabbits and catch them? I'm talking cottontails here as I've never run down a hare in the open. In the past three weeks my hounds have run down and caught 4 grown cottontails after hard pounding runs. First one was a 45 minute run. Was runni...

Re: Kenneling hounds when hare hunting

When I go north to hunt I usually go for two weeks and take 4 dogs. I've been doing this ever since I moved here to Tn. from New Hampshire 22 years ago. I have a fairly spacious dog box that accommodates two dogs on each side easily [ can do three if need be ] and put down a good layer of straw in i...

Re: FTC THREEJAYS JACK FLYMAN BIG MALE

Hey Ron How's it going? Your male out of Fly Man looks very much like my female out of Fly Man and my Tess female. She too is a big girl but I don't really mind as I have no plans to trial. She's up on legs and a very athletic hound that can go over a 4 ft. woven wire cattle fence in a heart beat. S...

Re: Tale of Two Summers

Hey James Glad to hear that the pup is doing good. My female litter mate [ Queenie ] is full of it. Have taken her out a couple of times with the big dogs just to get her used to riding in the box, being in the woods and being with the pack. She doesn't hang with me,she goes where ever the other dog...

Re: Tale of Two Summers

Hey James Don't feel too bad for Harechaser. He posts me and tells me he's out running and has had a hare going for 2 hours straight and the temp. is 51 degrees in New Hampshire. I'm picking mine up at 10:00 A.M. as it's already 80 degrees and I'm melting ! Course he'll also post me in January and t...

Tale of Two Summers

Just thinking about how different the summers of 2016 and 2017 have been---especially when it comes to running the beagles. Last summer we were in what all were referring to as a drought here in east Tn. We had gone many weeks without a touch of rain, the temps. were staying in the mid to high 90's ...
