Re: pressure on a rabbit

Read the "Run To Catch" posting on here. Don't know what "too much pressure " is.
Over the past 50 years I've run hounds on most game chaseable and I ALWAYS want a hound to be putting pressure on it's game.
Constant pressure is what puts rabbits in the sack and game up a tree.

Re: Run to catch

My good friend Bob Ferranti is down from New Hampshire with his beagles and we are enjoying a week of hunting. Had super running most all day yesterday.Hunting on a big refuge with hundreds of acres of corn and lots of good cover. My son Zack was hunting with us and he got two,Bob shot two and I sho...

Re: Run to catch

Hey Rowdy No I didn't get up there this year.I usually go north for a couple of weeks of hare hunting every other year and on the off years another good friend of mine from New Hampshire comes down for a week of hunting with me.He'll be here next week and we've got a couple of days of hunting with a...

Re: Run to catch

Great pics Rowdy. Thanks for posting! Had a nice cool / wet morning today.Took all four of my females. First rabbit up was a pounder with very short checks and the girls drove him hard and to a hole after about 45 minutes. Second rabbit they could drive pretty hard but he must have been an educated ...

Re: Run to catch

BMBeagles If you are asking me if my dogs regularly catch rabbits in Jan. and Feb. the answer is no. I live here in Tn. so the snow question is often moot.We often go through a hunting season with no snow at all and when we do get 3-4" it doesn't affect my dogs at all. All my dogs are from hunting s...

Re: Hot stud dog

Harechaser You couldn't have said it better. Years ago when I lived in New Hampshire I had a pretty decent Bluetick coonhound.Never Nite hunted her in competition but she had quite a few coon knocked down to her and could do a pretty good all around job on them in most all conditions. I took a trip ...

Re: Female just comes in to heat in the spring

I have had one to come in season only once a year.Had another that went 18 months before coming back in.Have two now that will go 7-8 months between heats. Sometimes if you get them bred successfully they then will get on a regular 6 month cycle. Also something to consider...... If you are running a...

Re: Run to catch

I know this is a rabbit / beagle site but I also realize that an awful lot of beaglers have also kept the big tree hounds. When I first moved to Tn. an older beagler I met at the trials told me that "most beaglers around here used to be coon hunters or chicken fighters before they got old" LOL. I ke...

Re: Run to catch

Hey Dan.No, I don't think you or John were trying to make me feel guilty. When my dogs catch a rabbit maybe I should say that I don't feel guilty as much as I feel bad that that game little rabbit won't run again. But then again............... I was just thinking back to many years ago coon hunting w...

Re: Run to catch

I guess maybe I should feel guilty letting my dogs pound the rabbit so hard that they catch him.But I don't! Guess I feel it is the ultimate dog vs rabbit test. The rabbit is in control of where he goes ,what he does and if he seeks refuge or not. I've heard that in England they never carry shotguns ...

Re: Run to catch

Jackson Boys Excellent post and very informative! I don't own a Garmin so have no idea about distances run. Guys I run with up north on hare use them and it's always pretty interesting to see distances on a particular hare or how many miles they ran at the end of the day. I know a lot depends on the...

Re: Run to catch

I know some have mentioned catching them on the jump but I was talking about when they run them down / overtake the rabbit either by speed, stamina, relentless pressure, etc.
