Re: AKC vice president endorses Ban on E- collars

No telling how many times E-collars have saved hounds from being lost to a trash race, heading toward a highway, or just being lost in general. They save dogs lives. They are by far the most effective and humane way to control a hound in the field. Anyone that wont aknowledge this fact dont train do...

Re: Hunting range?

I run mostly thick cutovers down here and there is a good rabbit population so mine don't usually have to get out too far to find a rabbit. They are usually working within 50 to 100 yds of me and they jump quick. However, when we occasionally hunt in more open swamp or big woods, they will get out f...

Re: 1st Hand experiences you've seen a rabbit pull

Last year saw a big swamper running full speed toward flooded creek. Jumped off the creek bank full speed and splashed into the middle of the stream. Swam/floated down well over 100 yards before getting out and shaking off on the opposite bank. Then turned around and sat down and watched upstream to...

Re: ACCOUNTABILITY?

Down here in Louisiana and Mississippi where I hunt, the briars are so thick that the rabbits almost never hole up with you putting a few bb's in them. If wounded, they hole up quick. I find most of the time, when a fellow claims holed rabbit down here without popping a shell, it is just a plain and...

Re: Most dominating performance you have witnessed??

I saw the video that S.R. Patch referred to with Joeyman at the trial. Any rabbit hunter that was holding his shotgun and saw that may very well start culling hounds. That was embarrassing.

Re: Rabbit population

Seeing more rabbits down here in Louisiana than I have in the last 5 or 6 years. Looks like we are gonna have a good year.

Re: SWAMPERS & COTTONTAILS

I have hunted them all over Southeastern Louisiana and Southwest Mississippi area and no they dont interbreed, or at least that is what the book says. We have killed a few that looked like a cross but sometimes an immature swamper can resemble a streaker(cottontail). Comparing a mature swamp rabbit ...

Re: Curing Mouthy Hounds

I have a 7 year old male that is probably my best all around gun dog. He will open a time or two while harking to the pack. He also will whine and whimper when you drop the tailgate and make noise if he aint been run up in a while. He has done this since he was a pup. In his case, it cant be fixed p...

Re: Running dogs everyday?

rabbitearl, when my kids get grown and can take care of themselves and I get to retire, unless something changes, i think I could run a few hours every day and not get tired of it. I dont know if I could stay as long as this old guy you got there, usually 3 or 4 hours at a time is plenty for me but ...

Re: Superior Intelligence - A nice compliment for any hound!

When I was a kid we had only grade dogs and I had one old female that I had bought from a man as a 6 week old pup and she was either the mother or grandmother to darn near every hound we owned. Back then, we literally could hunt any place and the timber companies owned a lot of the spots, most were ...

Re: Superior Intelligence - A nice compliment for any hound!

I own a male dog right now that is 7 years old and has done exactly the same thing since he was around a year old. He is smarter than me in that it took me a couple years to figure out that he remembered where he passed a not track at. Most times when you shoot a rabbit in front of my gundogs, when ...

Re: Breaking a beagle on deer

Before I had e-collars we tried every way possible to break them and most times failed miserably. We put billy goats in the dogyard, rolled dogs down hill in a barrel with a deer hide, hung tarsal glands on a hot wire, put scent pads with deer scent on their collar for weeks at a time, cut them off ...

Re: Breaking a beagle on deer

Same in my area as far as letting one run for 2 or 3 days and leaving him out. We are infested with coyotes and also their are blacktop roads everywhere with plenty traffic. Last, but not least, a lot of folks have big aggressive watchdogs in their yards that will kill a beagle also. In my experienc...

Re: Breaking a beagle on deer

Different people do it different ways. This is what I do several times a year and I have not had a deer race since i started doing it this way. We have several rye grass fields that we plant every year and about 30 minutes before dark on up until late at night they will be full of deer. I will load ...

Re: Soloing - a different question

Ray S summed it up pretty good. I got 7 broke dogs and 4 pups that are 6 months old just out of the starting pen. Soloing a hound definitely makes them a better all around dog but I only get 2 or 3 days to take them out a week. Im not gonna leave 10 locked up to work 1. Just dont have time and dont ...
