You are correct; hare population is a cycle. However, the hare is on the verge of extinction.

For those who have seen a sharp drop in the hare population where they hunt, what year did you first notice it, and how much has the habitat changed since the hare were plentiful? Also, has the predator population increased?

When you walk through the woods and see coyote stool everywhere with hair in it, that provides a reasonable basis to conclude that it was killed by the coyote. It is possible that they found it dead and ate it, but I doubt it.

The PA hunters & trappers are the key to increasing the hare population. The root cause of the decline is an increase in the predator population, particularly the coyote. DH, I agree with you 100%. If you let a dog run on their own, you will be hunting with them rather than the dog hunting with you. I have see it all the time when someone trains their dog this way. You walk into the woods and the dog is gone!
