Re: How hot is too hot?
I had a setter that overheated in October while pheasant hunting. I wouldn't want to go through that again and will not run a dog when it's hot and humid. Heat stroke is no joke and the temps/humidity are worse closer to the ground.

Re: Rabbits , Rabbits , Everywhere
I'm seeing quite a few as well. Usually have two or three in the drive and a couple behind the house. Took a walk yesterday and saw five, from very young to full grown.

Re: If you could start all over
I wish I had started sooner and taken more risks, both with beagles and bird dogs. Iowa or South Dakota would have been a hoot when gas was 30 cents a gallon. It's been a good life, more bumps than I'd like, but lots of good experiences along the way. I DO wish I had followed my heart and had a care...

Agree. Fescue is detrimental to wildlife, especially rabbits and quail.

Re: Does Green-up Affect Dog's Scenting?
We had pretty good running this morning. We got one up in the woods with a lot of understory shrubs--multi flora rose, spice bush, gray dogwood, and aspen sprouts mostly-- with several blow-downs. Would be a tough place to be a judge. We didn't find much they could get up in the grass. Cooler temps ...

Does Green-up Affect Dog's Scenting?
We've noticed as spring comes on and the grasses grow and green up or when shrubs leaf out that the dogs have a harder time keeping the track going. Anyone else experiencing similar results? I know woodcock banders claim the chlorophyll affects their birddog's scenting ability. We're running when th...

Re: AKC regular & advanced judging seminars
I would be interested. Is it open to anyone or do you need to be a judge already?

Re: What would you do different in your trial?
I'm new to trialing, but.... I would like to see: Dogs must be registered. 15" or less--HONESTLY. Shooting rabbits over the dogs poses problems with judges/sponsor liability. How far, how many circles, how big a circle, before a jumped rabbit can be shot? Spectator/judge safety concerns. Curbing "bu...

Re: Got one!
We ran one about a hundred yards a couple weeks ago. Four or five dogs in the race. Track broke down and we figured he went to ground. My year-old-pup came out carrying it. Not sure who caught it, but he took possession.

Re: brace question
Did they have a shortage of judges? Seems a better break would have been one cast of five, three casts of four.

Re: Rabbit population?
I would be VERY concerned about snakes. Might be wise to have your dogs "snake broke." I would also be concerned about heat stroke. I wouldn't submit my dogs to those dangers.

Re: Snake ID?
Cowboy Up, Guys!!! Snakes provide a valuable service. Luckily, we don't have rattlers or cottonmouths. Whole different ball game with dogs.
