Re: Rabbit Portals
Thanks for responses. Some good thoughts. Love the cooperation/brainstorming u can recieve on this site. Trapping would b ideal, but for me, that would require a 1/2 hour drive every day to check traps. Looking for an alternative that tends itself. Farm Dog , any chance of posting picture with anima...

Re: Rabbit Portals
Newt, Interesting concept. May just give that a try. Will hang a trail camera as a 24/7 observant for few weeks. That should tell the story.

Rabbit Portals
Was curious if anyone had a proven idea or technique for allowing rabbits to enter a fenced enclosure, while preventing an exit. Always a good amount of tracks outside the fence. Have noticed the smallest tears/holes in the wire ,are eventually located and used as a thoroughfare. Perhaps would b an ...

Re: Anyone else have a problem with coyote????
Had very close call while running a single young hound just after dark this past weekend. Coyote got between me and the hound. Perhaps 30 yards away. Would have never known was there, hadn't it decided to let out a high pitched bark. That will get your attention quick in the black of the night. I ra...

Re: Land management
JT Talking hunting spots , not running pen or grounds where u can actively manage the property? This past season I snared 9red fox ,2 gray and 7 coyotes out of about a 35 acre thicket. This year the rabbits made quite a rebound there. I'm jumping game in areas of that property where they seldom use ...

Re: have you ever had a dog like this?
Joe, your account and time frame just brought back some great memories. I believe I was very close to where u were at at that time in 1981. Had made one of my frequent trips up into Saint lawerence county to hunt on a very cold wknd. Would have likely been Jan 1981. Trying to pin point based on also...

Re: Swinging Dogs
Alone , feed him plenty of rabbit tracks as often as able. If possible only run him in heavier cover. Will keep him closer. Avoid the wide open paths at the beagle club. Just encourages /amplifies that type of behavior in an over competitive hound. Good luck. With time and patience he will come arou...

Re: Big Nose ?
To respond to an earlier question about a hound knowing if a rabbit is up or not. If a hound encounters a random track , he neither knows if the rabbit is up or cares. He is a trailing hound. His brain along with natural abilities sort through all the info processed by the olfactory system, and caus...

Re: Big Nose ?
It's been enjoyable following this thread. Lots of relevant points. I have always felt a hounds nose couldn't be big enough provided they had the brains to properly utilize it. For a hound to be able to move a line down a dry dirt road, drive a hare through powder in 0 temps and still be capable of ...
