Re: What still constitutes a bloodline

The point I tried to make from the beginning was: if the traits are not present in the sire, dam,it doesnt really matter whats 3, 4, 5 generations back. Are the desired traits present NOW. To many breed based on the assumption that if Dingus is in the pedigree 10 times producing 31% of the genes, t...

Re: What still constitutes a bloodline

So you are right, Ozzie is not a duplicate of Dingus. But yes, Ozzie has inherited some of his traits I can't imagine anyone would expect a duplicate and I'm certainly not. Which of his traits did he inherit? Track speed? Line running ability? Nose power? Check work? Hunting desire? Please, I'm not...

Re: What still constitutes a bloodline

That's a hell of read there Laneline....my head is hurting now ;) In Ozzie’s case with the pedigree he has, Dingus MacRae is the dominating factor in his gene pool and biologically, Ozzie with his 31% should carry many of his characteristics and traits, especially if you breed him to a predominantly...

Re: What still constitutes a bloodline

How is this different from doing one's research? Dogs are known for their traits, right? So individual dogs are not meaningless. They all contributed traits. they were not all homogenous. Some contributed foot, some contributed color, some contributed exceptional nose, etc. What you really want to ...

Re: What still constitutes a bloodline

A prepotent bloodline is based on traits and characteristics not names printed in ink on fancy paper. I have to wonder if one can even separate the two? Traits and characteristics are wholly dependent on the names printed on the fancy paper. Who do you think owns those traits and characteristics? T...

Re: What still constitutes a bloodline

I think a pedigree makes for interesting reading while you're "on the throne" and thats about it. Riverbottom and Klrconcrete have it right. A prepotent bloodline is based on traits and characteristics not names printed in ink on fancy paper.

Re: What still constitutes a bloodline

As far as setting the traits and characteristics within a breeding program I concern myself more with individual making the selection process than the actual bloodline or the style of breeding practice being applied ;)

Re: cold nose

We have very few hare down here in the mountains and it makes it MUCH easier to get one going if you have a good cold trailing hound...when I go hare hunting, my big nosed, big mouthed dog is the first one in the box!

I didn't mean to imply you fellows didn't know what a real hound is all about. However I think there is a tendency to under-appreciate a cold nosed hound in environments where such a trait is not a necessity.

Re: Crossing wild rabbits with tame ?

Domestic rabbits are hare (genus = Lepus). Cottontail rabbits are a different genus (Sylvilagus). They cannot breed and produce offspring. Hares can breed hares, rabbits can breed rabbits - they won't cross. What is the source for your information? It was my understanding that most all domestic rab...

Re: north vs south

I feel a good rabbit hound can run a rabbit wherever the rabbit is no matter what terrain part of country etc... let me know if wrong. I say in some instances it may take some getting use too like snow and cold temps if they have never been exposed but they should still produce bunnies thanks It ta...

Re: Keeping pups outdoors

Have to admit I don't ever worry about that. We live out in the middle of the woods, 40 minutes from the nearest city and about a mile from any neighbor. Our pups also run loose until they are old enough to get themselves into trouble.

Re: Keeping pups outdoors

Bears hate dogs, but if a bear does get brave enough to come around (figures out the dogs are contained) and the dogs are going nuts (like they do here when that happens) the bear will ignore them. Here it's usually out to trash my bird feeder  We have pups outdoors right now, been outside sinc...

Reads like a great adventure. My youngest daughter enjoys hunting with our hounds as well. :)
