Don't know anything about field champions running on snow, never seen one.
BUT.....Deerhost, have you tried running in northern Minnesota or the northwest side of Superior? Might be a trip north that could change your opinion.

Re: have you ever had a dog like this?
I think the vet was an idiot. I run half the winter every winter in below 0 F. Got dogs that are 10 plus that have been running in the same virtually their whole lives.....no problems yet.
That said sounds like you had a pretty good ole hound there. Seen a couple like that......not many.

Re: INCORRECT PEDIGRES
I believe that DNA is good and as long as AKC does something about it when it is discovered, punishment will help curtail the problem. One more thing that I believe helps bring the problem to light and may help stop the forgery is the internet. These boards weren't around 12/15 years ago so anyone ...

I would guess pztrailman is correct..... I was running a 220 with 40s and was losing signal constantly on all of them. Picked up a 320 and everything is good with the same 40s.....

Re: Big Nose ?
Anyone own a fast dog with super nose? Shooter Page 1, in her older age she is high maintenance. I have NEVER seen the day she couldn't run, have ran her at 36 below in old dry snow, east coast dogs down with her wouldn't leave the road and could not even wag on the track when she brought it across...

Re: Big Nose ?
It seems to me most are conflicted in an effort to try and prove each has a theory that must be correct. The trouble of course is each individuals case can only be relative to the environment one is hunting and running in. After all if a hound can run in ANY and ALL conditions in ________. (you fill...

Re: Wolf Attack
It's almost comically shortsighted how people tend to view this subject. For the most part the wrong question is always being asked. Why would the wolf do that? When will someone start to ask the right question that will provide insight into the nature of their predatory/territorial behavior? Try th...

Re: what do the guys in canada do about wolves
There's two ways to do it..... hunt them over bait (usually on a frozen lake or pond). Satisfying but not really efficient. The other and really the only way to do it, is by hanging wire (snares) and you better have someone who knows what they are doing. Wolves are really smart and if you do a half ...

Re: When Wolves Attack (Warning--Picture is Graphic)
I am sorry for your loss... That is a terrible tragedy. I am honestly surprised they killed so many at once. That is not normal wolf behavior at all from all the things I have read... Here is another attack pic and story that is almost 100 percent IDENTICAL to your hound. It even looks like your ho...

Re: dogs blowing up
Breeding! If you see adog that is blown up look at dogs in its pedigree. You will find dogs that could not take pressure. Some dogs put on the pressure. Some dogs can't deal with pressure. If a dog blows up or needs special training to keep from blowing up it should never be bred. If a dog blows up...

Re: Big Dogs .Just curious ?
Thats true Jim, the bigger dog will set the pace for a while......but theyll wear down plowing snow sooner or later and then any dog that has had the trail blazed for them regardless of size will be fresher and have a chance. Over the last few years Ive gone from all big dogs, 15 inch plus to smalle...

Re: Big Dogs .Just curious ?
I've found it the opposite in deep snow.....the bigger dogs blaze trail, smaller ones have no trouble keepin pace in that stuff. On some of the crust days the little ones stayed up better while the bigger ones were gassing hard breaking thru and climbing out constantly. I've always preferred bigger ...

Re: More Snow Action
northern minnesota makes the adirondacks look like florida and were olny a few miles from the canadian border. Yeah, but the border you speak of is right by Toronto....barely even Canadian so it doesn't really count. Hell they call in the armed forces (what little we have anyway) when it snows :sho...
