Re: Field Trial Ponderings
beaglers spend infinately more money on running pens, electronics, kennels, nutrition, than they ever did 60 years ago. A great dog pops up now and then. As a judge I see plenty of junk at every trial. Many of the local hunters buy pups from Field Champions with lots of speed resulting in high maint...

Re: Field Trial Ponderings
Unfortunately lots of studs get hyped up and promoted that don't produce much and far too often a persons best gyp is complete junk as many of you stated. I guess it's easy to take the high road if you own one of the best. Easy to tell others what they should do when it's likely not even an option f...

Re: Field Trial Ponderings
Just because you offer you male for public stud does not mean you must breed to every female. You can require the gyp owner show that the female is worth breeding. Not many do that, but I wouldn't breed a male of mine to a brood bitch or gyp with real bad faults. Many will just take the stud fee and...

Re: Field Trial Ponderings
If you don't want to show them in the field and deal with all the aggravation then not offering them for public stud is your best bet. Your choice for sure.

Re: bellmaster beagles
Assuming your talking about height, most dogs reach their height by 1 year old. For AKC purposes a dog can not get an official measurement until they reach 18 months old. Most dogs on a healthy diet will continue to fill out in the chest and sturdy up for as long as 3 years. In my experience some do...

Fastone,
I actually started this thread about field trials but welcome any and all comments. Breeding to FC's and being able to watch them run is certainly a relevant topic.

Re: Field Trial Ponderings
Well stated Wickert! Truth be told some of the dogs would perform far better if these behaviors were eliminated or modified to make it more realistic. I think what most field trial committees would tell you and I understand the concern having been in that situation is: if we take to long jumping rab...

Re: Field Trial Ponderings
In AKC the judges must place 4 hounds and idetify NBQ. I have seen a couple trials where no hound should have placed but it's not an option for the judge. I understand CKC gives the judge that option but I doubt it's utilized very often.

Re: Field Trial Ponderings
Neil, The AKC rule book lists and describes a long list of faults. You listed several of them. Should they be ignored or overlooked? I would argue a pack of reaching, skirting, extra mouth off the line WILL cause you to lose rabbits and ultimately not bring a rabbit back to the gun. Often in a field...

Re: Field Trial Ponderings
Not sure it would be fair to make a guy from Georgia or Mississippi drive north to snow country to validate a dog in conditions it never runs in.
Regardless if a dog validated with AKC I would want to see it run before breeding to know it's what I'm looking for.
I like the idea though

Re: Field Trial Ponderings
Ray, Nobody will accuse the Midwest of not running year around. Holding the snow trial is not the end game. I have judged or observed far to many where conditions were tough and due to the over competitive running style nothing could keep a rabbit going. Rabbit after rabbit 50 yard dash and nothing....

Re: Running pen question
What size wire did you use. Wire has gone up in price exponentially in 17 years. While I don't want to go cheap, spending $40,000 for fence is not an option I'm considering. I will give them a call as prices were not listed on web site.
