Re: Breaking beagles from deer
I've heard of that method. It is supposed to work. I have a young--19 months--dog that pays no attention to deer tracks. I'm hoping he's just naturally broke, but none of my dogs ever go afield without e-collars. I'd like to trial him this fall and I need to be somewhat convinced he'll leave deer al...

Does Ohio have a closed running period too, like Michigan?

Re: Any tips for increasing hunt in a dog?
I agree, prey drive is something they are born with. I'd keep feeding him tracks as often as possible. He might come around. Running him in a pack, as has been suggested, may help too. Good luck! I have a young male that I got in November of 2015. I wasn't able to do much with him all winter due to ...

Re: Looking for some dogs to run for pleasure ,
I wouldn't sell my worst dog that cheap! Puppies are going for $150.00 to $300.00. You want someone to put all that time and work into training and running, for the same price as a puppy? Good luck!! I think you need to add a zero to that number!

Re: Accomplishment over Style
"I agree with you, judges should judge a trial by the book, not their personal preference." Amen!! I haven't seen it very often, but it does come up. The rule book should be the only criteria for judging. A lot of judges, at the bigger hunts, have never seen our dogs run. My champion dog is either all...

Re: Keeping Judges for the Entire Hunt
We have had three club hunts this year and averaged just over 50 dogs per hunt. The last hunt, we had 15 casts, including the semis and finals. We used 5 or 6 judges, so that would be about 10% who judge. It's probably a little higher because most guys have multiple dogs. A lot of times, a judge has...

Re: Keeping Judges for the Entire Hunt
That's a bit steep for a local club. Not a bad idea though. Adam Hughes offered $200.00 extra to anyone who judged the first two rounds. The biggest thing is, we need more, younger judges.

Keeping Judges for the Entire Hunt
We seem to lose judges as the day wears on. I understand some people have to leave and judges get tired, but too often it is a scramble to find a judge for the finals. I'm thinking about maybe offering an incentive, like a pre-paid credit card. Each time you judge, your name goes in a hat. Others ha...

Re: Accomplishment over Sytle
My attitude too rhoward!! There is not one thing you can do, short of cheating, to make your dog win once they are cast. It depends on the rabbit, does the judge see it, the location, the other dogs in the cast and how the breaks fall. These factors cannot be controlled, so relax and have a good tim...

Re: Judging at the world hunt
It is the rules we play by. Even if we went to four minutes to produce, we would still have minuses. I have seen my dog pull sticks from a brush pile to get at a rabbit that won't come out and watched the "clock" run out with the judge standing right there. We all knew there was a rabbit there. It i...

Re: Judging at the world hunt
I thought the judging that I saw was very good too. All I ask from a judge is to do the best they can. I've tried it and anyone who thinks it's easy has never done it. As one of the judges at our HOY run-off told me, you have to make a snap decision. If at the three-minute-mark, and the rabbit isn't...

Re: Opening Before the Rabbit is Up
It would have been interesting if it was a regular trial to see what the other dogs and a judge would have done. I agree, I think most judges would give him a strike. This wasn't pottering around in one place for three minutes. He was moving the track forward, sometimes hammering and sometimes geari...

Re: young pup
I've seen vast improvements soloing my dogs. I think it builds confidence. My 15-month old pup, I can run with my older male, because they both hunt independent of each other. I like being able to watch each one and see how they hunt and handle a track. It tales a lot of pressure off if they can tak...
