Re: Ideas or pics on feeders for enclosure

I really like the style of feeding station posted by Gary A. and will build a couple of them in my pen. I do think that placing it in tall cover would make it more effective and provide more protection for the bunnys when they come to feed. Have no idea who thought of this style but thanks Gary for ...

Re: What breed??

Hammer79 - Selecting a dog by bloodline my not be the wise thing to do. All bloodlines have dogs within a litter with varying abilities (run at different speeds, poor check work, hunt independently, difficult to break from off game, hard to control). Pedigrees and selective breeding will enhence the...

Re: Over barking dog

Both are young dogs and may just being mouthy from the excitement of the freedom, hunt or other dogs. Young dogs will often open on off game; quail, squirrell, deer or turkeys. I would not use an e-collar to correct the dog since you cannot be sure why it is tongueing, besides it may out grow this f...

Re: Anybody know where to get a good beagle in Indiana?

Lebro and Owl Creek both offer some very good advice. As a new Beagler, I would not buy pups based on how good their Sire and Dam are. Pups are a "crap shoot" when it comes to what they will be like when they mature. Pups require a large investment in time and money, knowlegable handling and lots of...

Re: trouble starting a dog

Sounds like the 15 month old dog is going to be a " late bloomer", if she ever does bloom. Dogs are like people, some do what they are supposed to do and others do not. IMO, a Beagle shoul train itself if given the opportunity. Your hound appears to have given every opportunity. Now, it is just a ma...

Re: not an anti-shooter, but

I can certainly relate to those with very few rabbits and a good day's running is hard to come by. No doubt, we can all remember super good years with lots of rabbits and when great gun dogs were easily trained. Like all other wildlife the population tends to rise and fall. We just have "suck it up"...

Re: question about training and breaking scents?

Rabbit training scent is a total waste of your money. If you cannot find a wild bunny to train with , then buy a domesticated one. Your hound will learn much, much more.

Re: Pen question

I would definitely look for and set live traps for house cats, tame or feral. When your catch them, rehome them by way of a .22. House cats will decimate the rabbit population on short order. You seldom see one in the pen as they hunt, early mornings, late evening and night. Look for their tracks in...

Re: male attacking pup

Bodetis - Have you tried a "Bark Collar" on the pup? It will quickly learn to keep it's mouth shut in the kennel. At the same time, it will learn that when the additional weight is removed from it's neck, barking has no punishment.

Re: Running all year

Frankly, I do not think that the frequency in which a dog is ran has much to do do with it running only rabbits or sometimes "off game". The dog will run whatever it's owner permits it to run. Ever wonder why we all buy and use good e-collars? Just my opinion.

Re: Rabbit Numbers?

Rabbits numbers in this part of the state (north central, Arkansas) are "spotty" at best, rangeing from hardly any to a fair population. A very wet spring that drown most of the early born, along with uncontrolled predators surely takes it toll on the number of bunnys. Feral house cats are perhaps t...

Re: dog trader

Being or not being a "dog trader" is defined in many different ways by just as many people. My definition is a Breeder that whelps more that two litters of pups in less than 24 months may be a "trader". My thoughts are that very few houndsmen can kennel and prove out more than 2 litters of pups. If ...
