Re: Fertilizer Soil Test

Just a note on the soil tests. You don't need a fancy probe as seen in the OSU article. Take a shovel or trowel. Throw a good sampling of your area from about 6" deep in a "Clean" container. Stir it all together. Pull off about a 1 1/2 cups. Fill out the form and send it in. These labs are always he...

Re: Fertilizer

In my area of NE Ohio I use 2-3 50 lb bags of 25-5-10 as a starting point for most grains and shrubs. This is just a starting point though. The few minutes it takes to do a soil test will reward you with a better crop. It will also pay for itself in fertilizer savings by helping you to get correct r...

Late June Sorghum/Millet

Planted this piece on 6/21/14, late June. We had so much rain I couldn't get on the ground earlier. This was the 1st time I tried planting Millet. I went light on the rate because I threw in some clover blends, and grasses to hopefully come on later. Not an ideal time to plant clovers. Caught rain a...

Re: Release Cutting, Edge Cover, and Brush Islands

Thanks Larry, Save your pics. to a folder on your PC. It helps to resize them first. I do this by right clicking on the pic. and select >open with. Then >Microsoft picture manager. When your picture opens there you can resize and save it. On the right column is preselected sizes. I used "small docum...

Release Cutting, Edge Cover, and Brush Islands

We had our woods logged about 20 years ago. At the time we didn't know any better and just let go. We did plant a few oaks. The Silver Maple took over and completely shaded out the understory. Very little winter cover. These are before and after pics.. In the last photo you can see a comparison of s...

Re: Winter Cover Crops: What Are You Planting?

Do you have thoughts on what we could plant for quick cover for the winter? Most of the area is wetter ground and will be partially shaded. Your right about the wheat heading out and I don't think I would want to mow it during nesting season to prevent self seeding? I can till the areas in the sprin...

Re: Winter Cover Crops: What Are You Planting?

I've spent the summer clearing out a six acre woodlot. I cut out close to 100 trees all Silver maple. The had shaded everything out and there was no cover or understory. I saved the saw logs for sale and used the tops to build brush piles every 200' or so. Saved all the Ash, Cherry, and Oak.They are...

Re: miscanthus grass

Miscanthus sin. gracillimus, Maiden Grass does not self seed in colder northern climates. I've been growing it here in Northern Ohio for over 20 years as an ornamental. I've never seen a single seedling in the field we grow them in. They are started by division in the spring. We grow them along with...

Re: Anybody know what this is

Nice pictures Steve. Milo is the another name for Grain Sorghum, Sorghum Bicolor. I believe rabbits do eat the grain. Especially in winter months. Planted a lot for dove.

Re: miscanthus grass

I do not have a pen but hunted an area last year that was an overgrown nursery with a patch of it. The rabbits were always in there. The stand was really dense and drove the dogs nuts. The rabbits would run circles within 5' of the dogs. I'd plant it with a little space, maybe 5-6' between clumps. I...

Re: Obedience training book for beagles?

Househound, Just a wanted to thank you for the recommendation. Beagle Training Basics: The Care, Training and Hunting of the Beagle by Bill Bennett. Re: I Despise A Thief

Sorry to here about your break in. You loose your sense security and of your home being your castle. We were hit 3 times last summer. It didn't stop until they burnt down 2 skid steers and $80,000 truck at another business and broke into a families home at 2 in the morning while they were home. They...

Re: Fall planting of Native Warm Season Grasses?

I'm sitting here laughing  . I spent a lot of time research something to come up for quick cover on a fallow 5 acre piece I have. In the end I came up with a mix almost identical to yours. I should have just called you! How do you intend to fit and plant your piece in the spring? BrownBear, I ...
