Good luck with them my friend. Hope all goes well with Josie through the process from birth to weaning. You always do a good job caring for and tending them.

Re: Dog Boots?

Don't know what your terrain is like where you hunt or if you hunt hare or cottontail. I am strictly running hare and would never try dog boots on my hounds. One, I would think they could easily become caught in brush piles, briars, old fence, etc. Two,there are times when in crust conditions the dogs...

Re: less rabbits

Rowdy's hounds won't take a back seat to any man's hounds. I spent a few days in Maine with him this last Dec. As good a dogs as you'll find anywhere in the country. Hard hunting tough hounds that ran well with anything the rest of us put down and did their fair share of the work from start to finish.

Re: most desired trait

Ability to run the line with minimal losses, tight in the check area, conformation (not wide bodied but not to slim either, leggy) with tight feet, hunt/search, bidability (handle), appropriate mouth for conditions, color.

Re: Bloodline???

I see and hear many who use the term Bloodline in reference to whatever the latest rage of the age is in the hound dog world. Occasionally their use of the term is legitimate. Often though, there really is no bloodline per say, but merely an outstanding individual that is being widely bred and perha...

Do you think your English Foxhounds have the same ancestors in their pedigrees as my dogs?
No. But if you are relying on observable traits alone could they be?

I'm of the understanding that a bloodline is defined by common ancestry as well as the demonstration of common characteristics.

Re: Bloodline???

Blew the dust off the old Webster's Dictionary and looked up "bloodline", one line definition - "Direct line of descent, strain; pedigree" Checked the trusty Thesaurus, "One's ancestors or their character" So if the dogs I own all have good line control, know where the point of loss is and consiste...

What would be the correct definition of the term "Bloodline" as applied to beagles or other hunting hounds?

Re: Latest reproducing rabbit hounds

...............also, why does the stud get all the interest/credit for "producing" these "qualities"? Give me a good reproducing bitch and I can take her to the stud of my choosing that I feel compliments her strengths and weaknesses. A good bitch line is as valuable or more so in my book. Ideally y...

Re: Maine

Sometimes these kinds of gatherings can go south.........for men and hounds, Guys who have never met in person, gathering to put down a bunch of dogs that have never run together and in the midst of tough conditions can sometimes spell disaster all the way around. What a wonderful surprise to watch ...

Re: known dogs

I agree that the title FC should not be a primary consideration when looking for a good hunting dog. Yet it certainly should not be a disqualifier either. I spoke with Vic Costanza about Romo and he said Romo was first and foremost a hunting dog deluxe. Not to say that every FC is. It's up to the ow...

It depends on where you are hunting and the conditions. But most important it depends on the style that you most enjoy.
Beagling is supposed to be fun. If you like them, you feed them, run what you like
