Re: How many?

Beagle Huntsman I've been a collector of books, paintings and prints of hounds for many years now and have accumulated a pretty good little collection of them. I used to be in touch with a book dealer out in New Mexico that specialized in books on hunting, hounds and as he put it "the great outdoors...

Re: How many?

Beagle huntsman Yes that's the mans name. I'm about 12 miles south of the W.M.A. and Greenback is probably 10 miles to the north. I've run in to him several times there and on other T.V.A. land. My beagles have gotten in with the Bassetts a couple of times and Richard is very cool about it. Nice guy...

Re: How many?

Beagle Huntsman I appreciate your response and congrats. on your successes with your hounds. I've never been real big on trialing but have been able to win/place a few times over the years and it's a good feeling of accomplishment -- especially when it was with a hound that you bred, raised and trai...

Re: How many?

Beagle Huntsman Don't know if you've had any experience running hare in 2 feet of fresh powder snow. I don't believe you'd have much success with 12-18 beagles in those conditions. In fact I think it would be a horror show and they'd be lucky to put a circle on them. Most mid winter gun hunters up n...

Re: How many?

I currently keep 4 females and that's plenty for me. I've never kept more than 5 grown dogs at any time. Taking in to consideration handling them in the woods, taking care of their needs such as shots, worming, housing and feeding that's about right for me. Plus if and when I run with someone else they...

Re: Run to catch

Beagle Huntsman and ericwaddle3 I don't go along with the idea that there are no rabbits due to the coyotes. Like you mentioned, we all have coyotes where ever you live and we still have rabbits. Now the flooding , that may be another thing completely. Two years ago when we went out there to hunt al...

Re: Run to catch

My son and I just got back last night from five days in the Mississippi Delta hunting swamp rabbits. It was pretty frustrating as the rabbit population in the Delta is terrible this year. This was my third trip to the Delta and in the past we've enjoyed some really good hunting. This year we hunted ...

Re: american beagler

Hey Ericwaddle3
Are you sure you're not thinking of Hounds and Hunting / Better Beagling?
I know a young lady owns that publication. Don't know who owns the American Beagler these days.

Re: Run to catch

Hi Mike How's the beagle / hound crosses working for you? What breed of hound are you crossing the beagles with? What size dogs are you getting or striving for? Have you figured out the most efficient size for what you are wanting? Years ago I had a litter of Bluetick coon hound pups and a guy came ...

Re: Run to catch

Likeemfast I grew up in central Massachusetts and the Fish and Game Dept. stocked pen raised pheasants on W.M.A.'s. We always referred to them as the "chicken farms". Strictly put-n-take game management. Pretty much the same thing they did with trout. Dump buckets of them off the bridges and at the ...

Re: Old bloodlines search

Over my hound dogging career I've had the opportunity to pretty much get after all game chaseable at one time or another. When hunting bear we often would strike off a bait that had been visited sometime during the night. There was usually one specialist in the pack that we would free cast and let h...

Re: Run to catch

Hey Daddy Rabbit Do you recognize this picture? It's the December photo from the 2020 "Daddy Rabbit Kennels" calendar that you sent me about this time last year. I thought it looked familiar -- the church is in Lyme Center, New Hampshire. When I first moved to N.H. in the mid '70's I lived about 4 m...

Re: Old bloodlines search

Some might take exception but I've been told that the Turbo dogs were heck on deer. Don Hoog who owned F.C. Turbo Powered By Prop said that he was one heck of a rabbit dog but that he couldn't keep him off the deer. Others told me that he'd leave a running pack on rabbit at a field trial and break o...

Re: Old bloodlines search

John Hall from Vermont who at one time was the spokesperson for the Vermont Fish and Game Dept. used to keep hounds with Mountaineer breeding.
Been many years since I talked with John so don't even know if he still has beagles.
