Re: Starting pen?

Good advice. I will see what the cost would be to just fence the 4 acres. Barb wire is already there, so it would just be attaching to it to prevent the rabbit from escape. How tall should this fence be?

Re: Starting pen?

Is there and right or wrong way to build a starting pen? I have the land available to build varying sizes, it's the budget that is limited. This the thought inside my head right now, balancing my need with my budget: Thinking about using 4ft tall chicken wire/ poultry mesh ran along my barb wire fen...

Starting pen?

Alright, may be a dumb question here. I keep hearing about starting pens. And I'm not 100% sure what folks are talking about. Assuming they are talking about an area of land that is fenced to keep rabbits from escaping, place rabbits inside and then turn dogs loose. Similar to a running pen for coyo...

WTB old, slow dog

Looking for an old, slow dog to help start my pups with. Don't care about the pedigree or even if it's registered. Not planning to trial the old dog, just wanting something to run and keep a race going for my young son and I. The dog will end its days with us and have an great life. Won't be swapped...

Re: Beagle starting...Questions galore!

Thanks for the thoughts. I think things are going pretty well. I just stood in the corner of the field where the rabbit went into the brush. Not on the track line, but about 3-4 yards to the side. I didn't say anything just stood by while they worked it. I know rabbits are here. Cold weather is comi...

Beagle starting...Questions galore!

So I have about a million questions right now and wanted to make sure I'm not being an idiot or expecting too much from the dogs. Any and all advice will be helpful to a newbie. Scene: Took my 8 month old pups out the last few weekends. Couldn't really kick up a rabbit to work with, so just kept try...

Pics of my pups

Here's a pic of my pups. The bigger one with the red/tan head is Ginny. She's about 10 1/2" tall. The smaller pup with more white is Little Luna. She was the runt and is standing proud at just over 9". They will be 6 months old in a week. Thought it was about time to get some pics on here!

Re: Anybody know what this is

Definitely Milo/sorghum/buckwheat. Tons of it here in Kansas. Our rabbits eat it and use the stalks for cover. With the fields tight to good cover like honeysuckle, old railroad beds, thick woods, and clipped pastures it is amazing. The Milo is a perfect food source for picking. Just my Kansas exper...

Re: New to Beagling and forum

Love the chair idea. I have a folding three leg stool that is perfect for this. I usually sit on a limb or let them explore and trail behind. We went out about 6 yesterday morning when it was cooler, but still about 80. They hit a track and were full speed for about 30 yards then lost it. They circl...

Re: New to Beagling and forum

We were out yesterday without the dead frozen rabbit. I wanted to see how they react just working through the brush. They seem to be picking it up pretty well. I was happy to see them work through the honey suckle, around brush piles, and along the edge of the bean field. Their heads were down, tail...

Re: New to Beagling and forum

Thanks guys. Love this forum and the ability to talk dogs! We are headed out tomorrow morning to explore the woods again. Instincts and ability seem to be there, just trying to start them right. With the big hounds I always had my older generation to build on so it's tough to start from scratch. I d...

New to Beagling and forum

I'm new to Beagles and the forum. I ran coyote hounds and been around hounds pretty well my whole life. Sold my hounds when my kids were born, couldn't afford to feed both. Now, my son's old enough to start learning about dogs...and rabbits taste better than coyotes (I assume; never ate a yote!) I b...
