2009 Indiana Youth Rabbit & Squirrel Hunt

Post by Keystone Kid »

This is to notify everyone that the Indiana Beaglers Alliance we will be holding our 7th Annual Youth Rabbit Hunt at Salamonie Reservoir. This year we will also be having a Youth Squirrel Hunt following our rabbit hunt. This is a Co-Sponsored event with Salamonie Reservoir.

We're starting to register youth for our November 7, 2009 YOUTH HUNT. We need all the help we can get. We need mentors to supervise the youth and quite a few dog handlers with good dogs to make these events a success. This year is going to be a little different. In the morning will be our traditional RABBIT HUNT @ Salamonie Reservoir. In the afternoon following lunch will be our "NEW" for 2009 YOUTH SQUIRREL HUNT. You can register for both hunts or one or the other. Just let us know when registration.

We still need some help in the kitchen, if there are any wives that aren't helping in the field with their kids, it would be nice if they could assist in this capacity. Debbie Cooper & Melanie Stafford are heading up the kitchen duties & decorating the dining area. We still need another one or to helpers to go pick up the food for the “post hunt meal”. These people would not have to be in the kitchen area the whole morning. They could watch the kids hunt most of the morning and then leave shortly before the hunt is over to pick up the food for the meal.

5:30AM-If anyone is interested, a group is meeting for breakfast at Richards Restaurant in South Marion at 5:30AM. For the ones coming from the south or east it would be right on their way to the hunt. I need to call reservations in for breakfast by Monday November 3rd. If you’re coming for breakfast I need to know by Sunday night November 2nd.

7AM-We're meeting at the Salamonie Office Lost Bridge West-just off State Road 105. Start time of the meeting is 7AM SHARP. All the dog handlers & mentors need to be there by or before 7AM. Youth can be there at or before 7:15AM. If you know others that can possibly help, tell them that "time is of the essence". Promptness is a must! We will be heading to the field in our vehicles by 7:30AM, and we should all be in the field hunting by 8AM.

12:15AM-We will be meeting at Bozarth Recreational Resort for lunch, pictures, & rabbit cleaning demonstration for all involved with the Youth Rabbit Hunt: (Optional)
If your not going to join us for lunch let me know ASAP because we order the food a week prior to the hunt. Here is the name & contact information of the campground that is donating their community center for our “lunch” after the hunt:

Don Bonsett with the Nation Cur & Feist Breeders Association contacted me earlier today. He is waiting for other board members to give approval. I should hear back from them in the next day or two.

We have about 5 squirrel dog handlers volunteering for this event, but we need about five more to make the event run smoothly. Still waiting to hear from some more Hoosier squirrel dog owners with good finished dogs to volunteer one afternoon of your time. Its for the future of our sport!

Don Bonsett got back with in the last hour. He said the Nation Cur & Feist Breeders Association will co-sponsor this event, and the president of the association is also going to try and get the NKC to also contribute. Thing are coming together nicely!

Don also said he could get about 5 dog handlers, so we could still use another two or three dog handlers.

If anyone wants to come from a distance away to help out, I can put up about 12 mentors or dog handlers on the Friday before or the Saturday after the hunt. Just let me know ASAP.

Cabela's have been good about providing door prizes for everyone involved, and Dicks Sporting Good have been helpful also. No one last year went home empty handed!

this is a way for us to keep our sport alive and a good possitive way to teach a kid a new sport. Fred Bear once said take a kid out to the woods for a hunt it will be better than any rush they get in the streets. jim my dogs are still young this will be their first season gunning over them so i cant help this year but count on it next year

We mostly have enough dog handlers for the afternoon squirrel hunt, but we're still in need of dog handlers for the morning rabbit hunt.

This is a great thing you are putting on! We are losing more and more hunters in each new generation, it's our responsibility to show the new generations what it's all about so take a kid hunting or pitch in somehow. If I were closer I would be there. I take a pack of hounds out each year for a similar event here in Ky. and also help out with a childrens squirrel hunt each spring. Good Luck and take care.

Thanks Jason

Everyone, we can always use more dog handlers. We can divide the groups up more and give each child more attention this way.

In the next week the IDNR (Indiana Department Of Natural Resources) will be posting these hunt's in all the news paper in the northern half of Indiana. Knowing this, we're anticipating 45 to 50 youth to attending this event. To play it safe, we need a minimum of 15 dog handlers for the rabbit hunt and 15 dog handlers for the squirrel hunt.

Dog handlers for November 7th Youth Rabbit Hunt

Tim Rayn, Anderson-NOT CONFIRMED
Kevin Caldwell, Middletown
Oscar Green, Marion
Ron Nichols, Muncie
Claud Newcomb, Urbana
Bill Fosburgh, Grovertown
Dan Burton, Andrews
Bob Roy, Huntington
David Lockridge, New Castle

-To play it safe we need at least 6 more dog handlers for the rabbit hunt.

Dog handlers for November 7th Youth Squirrel Hunt

Randy Wolfe, Fountain City
Dick Warvel, Fountain City
Brad Williamson, Peru-NOT CONFIRMED
Chuck Berry, Lafayette
Cash Berry, Lafayette-NOT CONFIRMED
Frank Barton, Peru-NOT CONFIRMED
Chris Westrick, South Whitley-NOT CONFIRMED
Randy Church, Marion-NOT CONFIRMED
Kenny Smith, Gaston-NOT CONFIRMED
Hasadora Reynolds, Wabash-NOT CONFIRMED
Rusty Hill, Francisco-NOT CONFIRMED

-At this time we need 12 more dog handlers for the squirrel hunt. It depends on the ones that haven't confirmed. If they do confirm in the near future, we only will need about 4 dog handlers for the squirrel hunt. Either way "we need more".

If you or if you know of anyone that can help please contact me!

I’ve ordered a fairly large quantity of the squirrel skinners. For the gentleman helping out with the 2009 Indiana Youth Rabbit & Squirrel Hunt, I will sell the skinners at “my cost” on the day of the hunt. It’s just another little perk to entice a few more to help out. I just ask that you bring cash.
