eye problem
Im having a problem with my dogs one eye. i have treated it with antibotics and kepted it flushed out it was no better in three weeks i finally took him to the vet she has him on 7 different types of drops-ointment -pain meds and antibotics she doesnt seem to know whats wrong said it could be where he is not producing enough tears. i have already spent almost 200 on vet bills and she said he may have to have drops and ointment in his eye for the rest of his life. unsure what to do- i have been treating him with new meds she just gave me along with the others and this morning i have seen no inprovement in his eye now or since i have started the meds unsure of how to deal with this situation do i continue to take him to the vet with no improvements or try to clear it up on my own i really would hate to put him down but i cant afford to take him to the vet twice a week either he is a good dog but unsure of what to do. has anyone had this problem or could give some advice in this matter
Re: eye problem
might be that the eye lid is rolled and the hair is irritating the eye --if so you will have to have surgery to correct it

The vet checked for that and plus did not see anything else in his eye.
Re: eye problem
What age is this dog? Has it ever had a cherry eye? what medicine is it on now?topkyhunter wrote:The vet checked for that and plus did not see anything else in his eye.

Re: eye problem
he is 3 years old and to my knowledge he has never had a cherry eye the meds he is on -ofloxacin opthal-flurbiprofen opthalminic-atropine opthalmic-erythromycin opthalmic-rimadyl-gen teal gel drops-erythromycin ophthalmic ointment
Re: eye problem
Those of course are to treat infection. The atropine I am not sure about as its used to dilate the eye. Your vet did not recommend cyclosporin for the dry eye?topkyhunter wrote:he is 3 years old and to my knowledge he has never had a cherry eye the meds he is on -ofloxacin opthal-flurbiprofen opthalminic-atropine opthalmic-erythromycin opthalmic-rimadyl-gen teal gel drops-erythromycin ophthalmic ointment
Does he have a corneal ulcer? sometimes these take a long time to heal.
One other suggestion. Rather than put down this dog if you cannot fix this is to remove the eye. Dogs do just fine with one eye. I certainly realize there is a limit to spending however if he is otherwise healthy he'd be fine this way.

Do you know what it might cost to have his eye removed?

Re: eye problem
I also have a couple pups with some eye problems. I ran them pretty hard that last couple of days and the tissue under there left eye is puffy and forcing the eye up and to the left. Can I give them a B12 vit. and an antibotic and squirt there eye out with visine?
Thanks for the help,
Elliott

Re: eye problem
No, I'm sorry I don't. Every vet has their own prices. I'd sure try to save it first but, if it came down to putting down a perfectly good dog or loosing an eye I think I'd find a vet I could afford.topkyhunter wrote:Do you know what it might cost to have his eye removed?

Not sure what B12 will do for them but, I would flush they eye with saline solution (purchase at walmart in the pharmacy) Get a tube of triple antibiotic ointment (neosporin) and use it in the eye liberally. be sure NOT to get the kind with pain relief! JUST the plain neosporin.. NO LIDOCANE! read the package closely. I would suggest you order and keep on hand terramycin eye ointment but, right now it seems to be on backorder everywhere.

I though the B12 would just help him keep in check. Could I give him an antibiotic pill along with the (neosporin antibiotic) in his eye then or not?
Thanks,
Elliott

Re: eye problem
B12 won't hurt ;-) oral antibiotic at this point probably isn't necessary. The eye ointment will be where the infection (if there is any) needs to be treated. make sure you flush the eye liberally because you could have seeds, weeds etc down under the lids. Eye injuries can look really scary but, they heal well. Keep him home until its better.Leah,
