I have a beagle that was attacked by something and bitten behind the rib cage it severed all the muscles and the diaphragm. He had surgery to repare the damage Friday. My question is once the injuries heal what are the chances if any for future tears to the diaphragm from running game and other activities. As far as the muscle damage is there any thing that cam hepl to return to full range of motion if it is lost.

I brought my boy home today, the vets did a great job fixing him up, he's pretty bruised up and has a foot long cut from his back to his belly as well as half a dozen small puncture wounds, if look at him from his good side and the way he's acting you wouldn't think there is anything wrong with him.
Thanks to all the vets that dedicate their lives to taking care of our hounds. If it wasn't for these two gentlemen I would have lost my best friend and hunting partner

Fred, I'm glad to hear it's working out for you and your hound. From the lack of response on your question, you can see that we haven't had that happen yet, so didn't know what to tell you. Keep us updated and let us know if and when he gets back to 100%.

As far as what got him - I'd put my money on a coyote. Don't be surprised if he's nervous about getting out in the brush away from you for a while. A coyote attack gives 'em a helluva fright. Best of luck to you.

Thanks Bev, you are right about what got him, he's doing real good today, the only problem he is having is getting on his favorite chair, he is a little tentative about jumping up other than that he moves fine, doesn't look or act like he is in pain.

Beagles, pound for pound, have the most heart of any dog in my opinion. Give him a scratch behind the ears from me.

Just read your post, and I too am glad things are working out for you and your hound. Please give an extra pat on the head of your hound after Bev's scratch behind the ear. Run ins with coyotes is tough on hounds and hunters alike. Shoot every stinking one you see. I don't care what anyone says about there place in the woods. They sure as heck are not welcome in mine. Blast away at the filthy, stinking buggers!!!!

Update on Jake, he got his stitches out yesterday the Vet said rest him for about 10 more days and he can start running again. It's going to be along 10 days, he's bouncing off the walls, especially when I load up the other beagles to take them. We dodged a bullet on this one, the vet said if it had torn his skin his lungs would have collapsed instantly. The man upstairs must love beagles.

Final update, I took him out last thursday and he ran for four hours like nothing had happened. Figured he'd be sore/lame next day, he was ready to go again.
