Two of beagles seem to be digging small holes in pen and eatting something from the dirt. Why are they doing this ? I have tried different dog foods, what can I do ?

When did this start, how old are the dogs, and what have you tried with your feed?

Sometimes, it's a mineral deficency, but can just be PICA (a bad habit of eating non-edible things).

My dogs do this too. I have no idea why and I don't believe its a mineral deficiency. They are eating a premium food and are all healthy. Its certainly frustrating because they dig little "wells" for eating all over the yard.

I've got the same problem with my 4.. They seem to be eating the roots of the grass!!! They're on premium food also...

Are you sure they're not eating grubs?

I don't how to stop it. I have a male that is 2 1/2 yrs old. His is the only one out of 8 dogs that does this. The other day I went to feed them and his face was a swaled up and full of pus. It came from him digging and sticking his nose down in the hole, he has a lot cut in his face from going thru the Brush. The dirt from the ground got in one of his cuts, and caused the infection.

If anyone know's how to stop the digging I could use the help.

Put them on concrete and fence them in.

Yes that would do it if I had the money.

You could try building an above-ground kennel. We have those for both our dogs. (If you need help with the plans just ask). Or maybe you could put them into a type of house-cage (for indoor pets) or a traveling kennel. Just something to block them from the ground.

PS. You might want to make sure that when/if you do put them in something, that it won't hurt their nails/paws any. Because I'm sure they'll try to dig while they're in the box.
