Never had that problem, but I'm not sure if jumping off the tailgate would cause it though. These little hounds go through alot more out in the field.

Your dogs may have a misaligned spine as opposed to a slipped disc. Either way, the nerves to the rear end get pinched resulting in weakness, incontinence and pain. I have had it happen to all of my beagles (5) at one time or another. My best solution is to skip the steroids given by the vet, they may help with pain and swelling but not the misalignment and head to the chiropractor. I have used a human only trained chiro for simple fix and an animal trained chiro for more involved problems with great results and avoid the drugs that destroy liver, kidneys and immune system. This is from 17 years of living with beagles, I am not a vet. Also, jumping off of tailgate is deadly for the back and should be avoided. My old beagle gets lifted down off of the high bed and out of the car. Cheaper than running to the chiro to fix her up. Carolyn

Timely subject for me as I bought a bitch about two weeks ago and ran her for the first time about 6-7 hours. I picked her up and she looked fine. I walked her to my ATV and picked her up and put her in the box on back. When I drove home, I took her out of the box and carried her to the kennel. Two days later her back end was paralized. She couldn't stand, or even drag herself out of her kennel. Two days after that, she was standing on three legs and the fourth one was hanging loosely. She seemed to have no pain at anytime and ate normally (I fed and watered her inside her kennel the first few days). The next day, she was on all four legs and bouncing around. I rested her for two more days and then tried running her for 4 hours. She seemed fine, and I brought her home and she looks ready to go again. I'll try her again in the morning. In 40 years I've never seen this before (a dog seemingly crippled, recouperate so fast). Her previous owner told me it had never happened before. I'm very curious how she'll turn out. Terry McBride ** Wrote this June 9th, and on June 15th she won a small class of 13 entries in a hard run LPH trial. Looks like everything is fine. I heard at this trial from 3 other guys that had the same problem in last few weeks. No idea what it could have been.
