I had a gyp who had pups about 6 weeks ago and she has been loosing her fur ever since she had the litter. I was wondering if anyone knew what would cause this and what I could do to get her hair back.

Good question. I have one that had pups and she lost her hair also and I was wondewring the same thing. I was told to rub rubbing alcohol on her but I have not tried it because I have been running her and i figured the alcohol would burn her where she has gotten scratched from running in the briars.

mix some borax with water and peroxide it should start to come back in abt 3-5 days, dont knw what the cause is but this worked for me

It's called a "blown coat", both my bitches with pups have shed down. Never researched what the cause is but it's common after whelping pups. It will grow back and there's no problem, just a common thing after giving birth in summer, my bitches whelping in Feb. never do this...

anyone have the pups do this as well? we had 1 litter that the gyp and pups are loosing hair, mostly on the sides. They are in with a couple pups a few weeks older and the older pups are showing no signs of hair lose?

Could be many different reasons why an animal losses their hair...as simple as "blowing" their coat from heat or stress, to allergies, to funguses, to skin infections...usually followed by skin lesions . Hard to treat something if you aren't sure as to what it is ....lots of cases need scrapings for the microscope to find out. Just keep an eye out and call the Dr. if ya need to

Thanks guys. We have tried several things and still no sign of hair growing back. I might have to call the vet.

Nu Stock works good just use as directed and the hair will come back with in 5 days.Ol TC put me onto this stuff and it's good.

I have a bitch and pups doing the same. Pups are losing hair on their sides and hips Tried shampoos, flea/tick remedies and nothing is working. Most of the pups have bumps on their foreheads too. (Little Bites?) Any ideas??

My friend just raised a litter of pups and he went through the same thing, come to find out they had lice they are so small you cant hardly see them with the naked eye,he was pulling his own hair out till he found out what it was Then he gave them all a bath in shampoo made for lice on kids it worked no more dry flacky skin and the hair grew back

It is mange. There are 2 types of mange that effect dogs. One is the ole mange we see on old dogs all the time. The other is what is commonly called "puppy mange" by the vets. It is mange they are all born with, but only in certain dogs under certain sets of stressful circumstances does it create a problem. Birth is one of them that does this. The only cure I know is to take them to the vet. They have a collar to put on them for 5 weeks or so that will take care of this problem. It takes a skin culture to know for sure, but that is probably what it is. It may be called Scarpatia mange or something.

It sounds like demodectic (red) mange. A skin scraping is the only way to know for sure. They look like little cigars under a microscope. It can be a serious problem. Vets' opinions vary a bunch on this subject. Usually a small dose of Ivomec will take care of it but they need to see a veterinarian.

All dogs carry these mange mites, they look like little cigars with legs under the microscope. Normally, a dogs immune system is strong enough to ward off infection. After whelping, the bitch might be a little stressed and let them get the best of her. Easy to test for, it's just a skin scraping. You use a dull #10 blade with a drop of mineral oil on it. Scrape blade back and forth on skin in one location until you get a little red patch, but no blood. Now transfer to a slide and smear. At 100x (10x occular and 10x objective) you should be able to find the mites.

If it's sarcoptic mange, they look like mean little crabs.

Another possibility, especially given that she just whelped is that she has a hormone imbalance. Hair loss is a common symptom of thyroid deficiency, your vet would need to diagnose this with bloodwork.
