I have 4 new pups that are 6 months old and are up-to-date on there shots. I have a regular vet but he will not give out a lot of information as to what they will need and how often from here on out. I would like to give my dogs there shots and wormers myself but have no idea what they need and when they need it. Can anyone help I know they need shot, wormer, heart wormer, ect but what and when. Thanks for your help !!

They will need a "booster" every year. Just a 7 or 8 way shot; if you have a Southern States or Tractor Supply near you, they'll carry it. Oh, rabies and kennel cough. You can order the rabies (Administered: 1x at 4 months old, 1x at 1yr old and then once every 3yrs) and kennel cough vaccines online from some place like Jeffers Pet; if your state doesn't allow the rabies to be ordered, then you can probably find a cheap clinic nearby. (i.e. a humane society) We use Safeguard/Panacur-C wormer and give it to the dogs around two times a year. Hope this helps. -Hannah

I will say that you will need to find your comfort level for doing your own Vet work. The comfort level will increase with time to the point that you will probably be able to handle all routine procedures and all but the most serious illnesses and injuries! Ivermectin 1% cattle and swine solution for heart worms . you can get ti at a farm supply store, also works for ear mites when put in the ear canal and great for killing certain types of the mange.
Give 1/10 of a cc per ten pounds of body weight orally, I just put it on a piece of bread or in their food once a month all year long. You will still need to worm every three months with another type of wormer I use panacure 1 cc per 5 lbs body weight kills pin, hook, whip and round worm all in one go and like everybody else said shots once a year and that pretty much is all I do other than if something comes up like an injury or illness and I still do my own doctoring unless it's life or death.
I bought a book at my local dog supply store that is a vet book for dogs and it covers everything from birth up until you got to dig a hole and I guess they figure a guy ought to know how to dig a hole or it would be in there too. I will post the name of the book later for you on a different thread

I do however have another question. I was told that giving Ivermectin every month was not a good idea it should only be given every six months. From what I under stand it has an adverse effect and causes hardening of the dog’s liver which can leads to premature death. A vet has told me he has seen a six year old dog’s liver on monthly Ivermectin look like it come out of a fifteen year old dog. Just a question and I know you guys will shoot it to me straight.

TURNER----you live in SC. you better use IVERMEC every month -or some kind of heart wormer --or you are going to have HEART WORMS in your dogs----

Good information. If you will allow me some correction, that 0.1/cc per 10 lb (per month) is dependent on what you're treating. This is a basic dose for heartworm, both to get sarcoptic mange, you need to give it again 2 weeks later. Further, the dosage for demodectic mange is TRIPLED and DAILY ... 0.3/cc per 10 lb, orally and daily, for at least 30 days (or until 2 negative skin scrapings).

That is actually a little off from the corrected original dose, and even more off from the currently-accepted dose.

The true dosage of Panacur (10%) used to be 1 ml / 4.4 lb, 3 days in a row. Now, because of worm resistance and people not using it correctly, the new accepted dosage is the same as just stated, but now it is als given TWICE DAILY for 3 days in a row.

It is good to do your own doctoring, but it is even better when you make sure you stay current on the latest medical information and don't assume that the dosages given in some book you bought 10 years ago are still true today.

As diseases and parasites evolve, and develop resistance to our drugs, so too does our knowledge base need to evolve and remain current as to the ever-changing realities out there
