I have a friend that a litter that is 1 wk old. He lost 1 yesterday and 2 today. He said they are covered with fleas. Could that be making them die? I told him to get rid of bedding and give them a bath in dishwashing liquid. I dont know what else you could use on pups that young. Any input would be helpful.

The person giving you the advice was right on the money! I like Joy others say Dawn. Either should work WITHOUT harmful pesticides! Be sure to use warm water, rinse thoroughly, then dry to prevent chilling the pups. Definitely get rid of the bedding! Be sure you get the fleas off Mom or you will be back to square one quicker than you can bat and eye!

Read your post too fast! YOU are right on the money Kenny. A heavy flea infestation could be the problem. Even if it is something else, he has nothing to lose by getting the fleas off them!

Thanks, he bathed them all including the mother. Told him he would probably have to do it everyday. He should also treat the ground with Ortho granules or something similar.

this is a shampoo we got from our vet to kill fleas and lice. it is called Virbac Animal Health Ecto-Soothe 3X

Kills Ticks, Fleas & Lice You have to be careful to avoid the eye area and near the ears. This stuff works very good I used it for lice treatment.

Never heard of what Joey uses but am definitely checking it out. I did use this stuff called Capstar once. You have to get it from a vet and doubt they can be used as early as a week. However it works fast and will kill the fleas but it doesn't last. It is just to get them off the pups. You'll have to treat the area they are in and remove the bedding. But the plus to using Capstar is you can give it to the Dam with no ill effects to the pups. Just be sure you treat their box and bedding well or you'll be right back a square #1

how have no idea how safe the shampoo i suggested is for 1wk old puppies. The bottle does say puppies on it. I had the bottle in front of me when I typed out the name of it. I saved it put it with my beagle stuff on the shelf.

if you are washing the nipples on the dam make sure they are fully cleaned off good so the pups don't get the shampoo chemical in their mouth. just a thought

and also with my recent litter I had no bedding. Just a piece of outside carpet. And when the pups were roughly3wks old I removed it and they were on plywood. i also nailed down the carpet to the plywood floor so a pup couldn't sneak under it.

***edit****

link to the shampoo i suggested states pups need to be 12wks old to use. You could check with your vet if its safe for 1wk old pups.

Boy's, Boys

Don't buy any special shampoo or anything for fleas White vinegar mixed with dish soap to keep the skin from drying out. Fleas hate white vinegar and it won't do anything harmful to the pups and it is cheap. Kills them almost instantly. :D

1wk old pups are too young for flea shampoo I would say. I would wash them in Dawn or Joy dish washing detergent. Get rid of all bedding. Put it in a plastic bag and take it far away as fleas will hatch out of the bedding. I mix up liquid Sevin in a spray bottle and spray in the the nooks and corners. Good luck with the fleas. I think you can put revolution on a nursing dam. That would also help with the fleas. Better check that out though.

My vet told me its ok to put Frontline on the dam and that would take care of the fleas on her and the pups.
