What bedding to use for welping box ?

Post by RunninHard »

Have a litter due on June 28, what should I use for bedding ? The box is ready other then the bedding, Just built a pig rail for it
I was told NO blankets, she will shred it and pups may get tangled in it
No Straw , the pups will get the straw dust in their nose/mouth
No pine bedding, same as straw
Thoughts ? Any help will be appreciated, Thanks Scott

a good clean flooring --not OSB board because the pup will get splinters and infection on their bellys ---the main thing is to keep the puppy warm --they come out about 100 degrees --once a pup get cold it is hard save one ---can be done --but you have to warm them up slowly

I never use any bedding it gets in the way and only causes problems. I dont even use any in the winter. Just a smoothe plywood floor. Its much easier for the mother to clean and care for them. I do heat the box in the winter. Very seldom lose any.

I like shredded paper. It is very absorbant and it mom swallows a bit cleaning the pups, it will not hurt her. You do have to change it pretty often.

Picked up some thick rubber/vinyl (tough stuff) and some 3M spray glue, glued it down onto the plywood then put the pig-rail in and nailed it down all n all I think it will work great, Thanks for all the help and idea's guy, Greatly appreciated  , Scott

that thick rubber will maintain the heat when you use some type of heat ---you still need a place for the pups that get too warm

None, or a dirt hole dug by the Dam.

Nature is the best raiser of pups.
