Puppy Diarrhea?

Post by MPankratz »

What do you use to treat diarrhea in a puppy?

My first thought is Loperamide, but in baby humans at least, due to the incomplete development of the blood brain barrier, it produces central opioid effects with notable toxicity and probably neurotoxicity. It's funny, because once your blood brain barrier is formed you could quite possible consume an entire bottle without any side effects- excepting of course the inevitable constipation.

I don't know anything about the development of the blood brain barrier in dogs or whether loperamide is approved for use in dogs, though, so I haven't given him any yet.

What do people usually use for puppies with diarrhea?

My pup has been on the same food for two weeks and now suddenly has very loose, but not watery, stools, seven or eight times a day (maybe more, I'm at work 3p-1 or 2a, sleep till noon and then go back to work, soon to change though!)

I've used Valbazen and I've used the calf scour pills from the Farm Center, broke a pill in half and gave them half each day.
Are you feeding wet or dry? don't give wet with scours, cut back and give cook rice/burger or dry.
Punkin filling has been mentioned to firm up the stool tho I never used it before.
The main thing with puppies is to give small rations more often and don't allow them to glutton themselves or it runs on through. give the stomach time to right itself.
I've had my pups out on the ground lot, with the exercise and fiber they take in from the grass and tree limbs they chew on, their stool is darker and firmer than before.
If they go to get'n poor or you see jelly/blood stool, check for coccidia or guradia.

If it is not parvovirus, coronavirus, or worms - then this should work:

Coccidia and Giardia have similar symptoms, we treat for both at the same time to prevent the loss of pups (See http://www.johnkoerner.org/LittleBlackBook/) . Here is what we do.

Purchase:
*Fish Sulfa Forte: Sulfamethoxazole 800mg, Trimethoprim 160mg (http://www.revivalanimal.com/Fish-and-B ... otics.html)
*Fish Zole Forte: Metronidazole 500mg
*10 cc syringe without needle

You fill your syringe with 8 cc/mL of water and dissolve one tablet of Fish Sulfa Forte and one tablet of Fish Zole Forte in the water. After it is dissolved, you mix it very well. Administer 1cc/mL of this mixture per 5lbs your dog/puppy weighs. Be sure to shake very well between dosages. Repeat this treatment once daily for 5-7 days.

We've never lost a pup this way, it should cover everything except worms, parvovirus or coronavirus.
