Fungus in the nose?

Post by Combs Beagles »

Has anyone ever dealt with a dog that has picked up a fungus in the nasal cavity? I've been around scent hounds for a long time and never seen this before. My hunting buddy has a really nice little male pup, doing really well in the field. We ran last weekend and noticed he had a small ulcer looking place on the corner of his nose. A couple days after that he developed an apparent abscess on the top of his nose, under the skin and the ulcer had grown to half his nose. He takes him to the vet and it is diagnosed as a fungus. The vet told him that it would be highly expensive to treat and the dog could loose his ability to smell......that would SUCK for a beagle!!especially this little guy.

The vet did prescribe a really high dose of antibiotics but so far little or no results.

Any thoughts

Not sure he directly said it but that's what I found online "Blastomycosis". Doesn't sound good!

Has anyone else ever had a hound get this? If so what was the outcome?

If it were blasto the dog would more than likely be dead by now. Very nasty stuff, pretty comen to the bear hunters down in Wisconsin.
