My vet recomended a mix of 3 parts alcahol to 1 part vinegar.Sqirt some in ears, masage ears gently for a bit then I use a piece of gauze to wipe them out. Hope this helps. Good luck. CHH

CHH,
The white vinegar/alcohol combo makes a good general purpose ear cleaner/acidifier, but won't kill mites. It is "extra-label" usage, but I like 1/10th of a cc of ivermectin in each ear 1X per week for 3 weeks for ear mites. That is assuming negative heartworm status of course. Remember...every goopey, itchy ear is not ear mites.

Thank y'all...
Goopey ears rule-outs:
-mites
-allergies
-fungal infection
-bacterial infection
-foreign bodies(weed seeds, etc)
-"other"
Ears can be a real pain inthe tail! You would be amazed at the work it takes to diagnose and treat ear conditions sometimes.

Great to have you back Doc S! We sure did miss ya.

I took a hound for a check up yesterday, and they did an ear smear. Positive for mites. Did the .10 Ivomec in each ear. My question is :
If you use Ivomec once a month for heartworm preventative. Do you still give it to them orally while treating for the mites?

Thanks for your time, I know you are busy.

Should actually be okay to do both at the same time, though I wouldn't. Do your HW preventative dose one week, and then do the ivermectin in the ears for the ear mites weeks 2,3, and 4.
