Some build a training pen with San Juan rabbits and plenty of brush piles. They put the pups in from an early age. Soon as they have their shots and are mobile. Let the pups search around and chase the rabbits until they get proficient enough to catch and kill them all. Dan M

i think i know what to do now let it sight chase a few times a tame rabbit then let the rabbit out before the pup then place the pup at the beginning of the track and let it track it for about a week then im gonna take it out in the woods and see if it jumps a wild one then when it can solo its own rabbit pair it up a few times with an older dog

Be careful
Just be careful not to allow too many sight chases. They will be running around with their nose in the air looking for the rabbit instead of on the ground trying to find it.
If you were on trial for being a Christian, would there be enough evidence to convict you?
I was going to start training it at about 4 months and let the dog sight chase it for about 20-30 mins i was only going to let it sight chase 2 times a week once at the beginning and once at the end of the week. Then let the tame rabbit out before the pup for about 15 mins then put it under a box then when the pup gets to the rabbit give it a treat and alot of praise

sounds good
That sounds pretty good. If you see him start looking around all of the time instead of hunting, you definitely need to stop the sight chasing. But 2 times a week should be ok. It just depends on the dog. You just have to read what the dog is doing. But that sounds like a good start.

training
A wise beagler told me a couple weeks ago to put the rabbit in a cage and let the pup "investigate" for a while. Some pups may first be afraid of the rabbit. Let the pup get to the point that it wants the rabbit and it is trying to get it to. Then go ahead with your plan. Sounds like you have it figured out. It's all trial and error. Just experiment and see what works best for you and your particular pup. But it seems like you have a good plan.

This is a good idea.mrwvsportsman wrote:A wise beagler told me a couple weeks ago to put the rabbit in a cage and let the pup "investigate" for a while. Some pups may first be afraid of the rabbit.
