I was wonder how would be the best way to teach a dog to retrieve a rabitt and bring it to the trainer, i know the sooner the better on the age but what is to old to teach, and where does a body get started on the training part? I guess what i tring to say is how do you get started to teach them, and what do you need to have to do so.

Nobody's answering you... beagles aren't great fetchers so you might have to take your lab or golden to do the retreiving. lol carolyn

i guess so i got a couple of friends who's dogs retrieved for them, but they said they never teach them to they just started doing it?
i guess it's just bred into some better than others.

That is my guess too. I had one hound fetch a rabbit. The others just want to tear them apart. Carolyn

yea thats what mine want to do to. I guess thats good enough for me, as long as they don't tear them up to bad.LoL

I've got a couple that retrieve but I never taught them. They just started doing it. I'm just lucky I guess.

Plateau, I had a beagle that started retrieving at 18 months but I agree with above post, it might depend on the dog but here's how mine started.......While hunting when I called the dog onto a fresh jump I would excidedly excliam "Where's it at, Where's it at" the dog would get excited and search like crazy looking for the track.......One day I shot one in very thick briar patch that I couldnt get into.....When the dog reached the rabbit she stopped and looked at me.....I kept saying "where's it at, where's it at" after a little pause, she picked it up and brought it to me.....from then on when I killed a rabbit I pretended I couldnt see it and asked "where is it" she kept bringing them......I never couldnt get another to do it like she could....she was a special dog, the kind that would look at you as if to say "tell me what to do, and Ill do it" and she usually did it......to this day I love a dog that cants it's head to one side and looks you in the eyes! You notice it more with bird dogs.....anyway thats my story

well i think i've got one of my starting pups retrieveing bunnies, the other day he caught one in the training pen and i told him to bring it here and he did and has been doing it sense. i guess some have it and some don't. but it sure does tickle me to death. always wanted a beagle to retrieve for me, hopfully i got one now.

Hey, that's great. I remember the first and only rabbit Krunch fetched up for me. She was so proud of herself. My beagles now just rip them apart if they catch them. Way to go! It is such a neat feeling. Carolyn

heck my beagles my male just don't care when its dead he just takes off lookin for anouther one my old female stands by them adn bays she brought one tom me 2 years ago though i thought i missed but it ran 20 yards and died and i heard her bay and a couple min later she walkedout with it but droped it when she saw me she aint ever done it sence just that one time lol
