Sargeant Major
His sire is Branko`s Big Leroy Brown and I pasted a few stories about Leroy from a past topic. I own a male out of Leroy also and he is a very good hound also , a line running hare machine.

Beaglehandler, Leroy Brown spent most of his life about 15 to 20 miles from me. He was purchased by Donald Robinson directly from Branko Krpan. Early in his career he was entered in a sanctioned trial (may have been a derby at Waterville) which he won. He was in two licensed trials, also in Maine, with a win and a 2nd. It's been 10 years or so and it may have been a sanctioned 1st and 2nd, but at any rate, he did pretty well for a dog with limited pack experience. The dog had no holes in him- solid in every way but I don't recall ever thinking he was a great hound. Way above average but there were other hounds at the time that I personally preferred. Keep in mind that Heli-Prop and Ali-Baba were running here at the time and got all the attention. At the time I was working with a bloodline that featured FTC Otterbrook Sam and I felt that Leroy's ability and pedigree matched up pretty well so I bred a good bitch to him. I think there were 5 or 6 in the litter and one was as good as I've ever seen at a year old. He was entered in two trials- a Large Pack on snow in which he took 4th out of 44 big males and another 4th in SPO-Hare, also 40+ hounds. That first hunting season he was phenomenal and none of us could believe his ability- easily leaving everything else in the dust on tough conditions. Now keep in mind that his dam was a littermate to IFC Greenbrier BirchHaven Merlin, the best I've seen on snow. So both sire and dam had a hand in this. Unfortunately, a few months later he was found dead in his kennel from his stomach rolling over and cutting off his digestive tract. As for the rest of the litter, nothing special. I still have a male from this litter, a beautifully built 15" male who never started. He is shy with strangers but I kept him anyway because it's nice to have a dog you can just have walk along with you in the woods. He's a pet. The rest were average and I don't believe any were ever trialed. Several years ago Jay Grysk from Southern Maine bought Leroy and 2 other Branko hounds from Don. He bred a few bitches but I never heard much from the offspring. Branko himself bought these 3 hounds and used them at stud but I don't know much about what may have come from these litters. Leroy was a nice hound but I don't see him as much different from most any good dog that has lived over the last 10 years. I don't see him as a well kept secret that only a few people were privy to. Lots of the guys here weren't impressed enough to pay to breed to him when they had the chance. I'm sure that if bred enough, he may have made his mark but he never really had the chance. I certainly liked him better than Ali-Baba but Heli-Prop was a better hound in my opinion.

I know of 3 hounds out of Leroy and 3 different Branko bred females that are now placing in trials in Canada. Branko`s Sweet Magnolia X ( Leroy x Whiskers) Eastcreeks Charlie Brown X ( Leroy x Sweet Bon Bon) and Branko`s Big Thunder X ( Leroy x Sassy Suzie).
I also cotacted the Krpan`s and asked about Leroy and his trial history. I then contacted the AKC and they have Leroy with 2 licensed seconds one with 37 hounds and the other with 35 hounds. I now have a couple 6 month old pups out of Branko`s Big Thunder and a Blue Ninja bred bitch. They started on snow at just under 4 months old and now six months of age can run 3 to 4 hours steady with a few losses that they usually sort out on their own. I run pups on their own and once in awhile with one older hound. These pups are pushing the older hound at only six months old. I am thinking about running them with a few more hounds to see how they handle it and I can hardly wait till hunting season.
I wish I had the chance to see Leroy in person but I own his son Branko`s Big Thunder and have seen Charlie Brown run a number of times, they both run clean and close to the line. I think Thunder has more foot and runs with his nose on the ground. I have had a few very good hunting seasons with Thunder, in cold temps and deep snow. I shot his first hare off him at 51/2 months old on snow. The only problem i have been having is that Thunder is a 14 3/4 to 15 in. hound who stands proud and he has measured out a few times. I plan on breeding him every chance I get and he will see some trials in the USA.

Thunder, that's the way that young male off Leroy ran. Fast and clean with super nose. I never heard much about any other offspring so thanks for filling in the blanks on some of the others. Have any of them finished?

Steve,
Sweet Magnolia is in Ontario with Terry I think she has 2- 1st, 1- 2nd and a 5th place all this year. Charlie Brown has a 1st last year and a few places also last year and a first this year.
Thunder has been in one trial this year and got a 2nd, he just turned 3 years old and will see a full season of trials this year. I like them fast as hell for hunting but they gotta have the line. Thunder is fast by him self and can really push the pack but when he over runs he shuts the mouth off and snaps back to the check. He has a chop mouth that gets faster when scenting gets better. He does not cold trail, he will hunt with you and handles like a dream. When I put him down you would think that he cut his legs off. His Dam is out of IFC Branko`s Sassy Sally and from what I have been told Sally was one of the best.

I hope you can make it down to our fall trial in October- I'd like to see Thunder in action. Jim's Bon Bon was a good bitch and I've heard that about Sassy Sally too. It always helps a stud's reputation when he breeds good bitches. It's too bad Leroy never had the chance to prove himself while he was young. I understand he's still alive but he must be near 15.

No Steve, I was in touch with the Krpan`s some months back and they had to put both Leroy and Ali Ba Ba down. I think they were both around sixteen. Leroy was around 14 when he sired my male.
I sure hope I can make it to Sunrise. I have a few military commitments but I am trying to juggle around the trial dates.

Steve C and Thunder, thank both of you for your post. It just shows what a real houndsman will do for another. I really enjoyed reading about these dogs and learning in the process. I have researched a few stud dogs and still come back to Thunder. Since I don't trial his size is not a factor, but his pedigree and style rate him first class in the traits I desire. Indianapolis, Indiana is a long ways from Halifax, Nova Scotia but somethings are worth the extra effort. Andy Smith gertysbeagles

Hello Andy,
I hope your young female is doing well and I am sure when she is old enough to breed we can work something out ( meet somewhere) maybe at a trial or something. Thunder will be around and I am sure you will not be disappointed, from what I see from the litter of pups I have out of him. They have some tallent, lots of hunt and desire, nice straight legs and real good nose. After this winter I will fill you in on how they do under the gun.
