nothing special about them... when you crank out 100's of pups a year, of course your gonna get some "rabbit machines" but your also gonna have some "crappers" to cull out. same as any line, they just have greater numbers to work with. i have a male who is 1/4 branko and i really like him but for the most part, id rather not have too much of that line.

Look at The field Trial Results For The last 30years. You will See a lot of Branko's crappers in the win colum. Have to cull in any breeding program. Not just beagles, race horses, game roosters, cattle, even your house beeds of dog and cats. Just one of the things we have to do to better all breeds. I just like the branko's blood because it seems to cross well with other breeds. I am line breeding off the Maravic's And branko's Lines allso have Northway And Indian hills blood lines. Have Friends with Asubale river, Birch lake, Kingwood [goes back to branko's] ,Tracker, Shaker, Stricker, And others Find a blood line you like. That has The traits you like. Not what is the flavor of the month. Check out till you find what you like. You are the one feeding them. They have to suit you not ever one else. You have good and bad in every blood line just hope you hit that world beater breeding we all are looking for. Good luck and keepem Running Charles V. Salyers {Briarshakers Daddy]

I'm not sure if you'd call it special or not, but being able to not only place and win in practically every registry and the majority of ever format says something about the bloodline. Along with that several folks contact Mr. and Mrs. Krpan whom are just hunters. Sure there's some folks whom are jealous and don't like the line, but that's something that goes along with any successful line of hounds no matter where they come from or whom has bred them.
With that being said even Branko himself will tell you that he's produce some bad hounds. All lines have a few duds here and there. A lot of folks criticize them for producing 100 pups a year don't have a clue. On an average a female dog has 5 to 7 pups. For them to have 100+ plus pups a year, that's 20 litters a litter, which is a crock.
Furthermore Mr. and Mrs. Krpan are some of the nicest folks I've met. While up there in June I watched probably 30 to 40 of their hounds run. Needless to say only one wasn't to my liking. Furthermore I saw some 4 to 8 month old pups that run better than some of the champions and other hounds many on this board crow to the top of the mountain about. I guess everyone is entitled to their opinion, but I was impressed with what I saw.
They're criticized a lot because folks seem to think they make a fortune off dogs. They do sale hounds here and there, but I can tell you they spend just as much money on their hounds well-being as they make from their hounds.
As Mr. Salyers said, fine something you like and go with it... whether it be Branko or any other line. Don't let someone else's positive or negative opinions of any line sway you... Go see for yourself if you're interested in something. Furthermore don't jump out and buy the first thing you see either. Branko's aren't the only game in town, but they're one of the tops in my opinion.
Best of luck with whatever you end up with.

They are very hardhitting hounds,most I've seen had good hunt and desire. Yes they breed alot of pups but they have to so they can meet the demand for them,must be doing something right. I like them very well and they do cross well with alot of other bloodlines. I have owned 2 from the Branko's,I liked them.

nothing special about them...
Then I assume there's absolutely nothing special about "blackdirt" hounds. The fact Branko can breed dog that will suit almost any taste and trial format speaks for itself. The females throw some of the most consistant traits across a whole litter on an out cross that most other big line names can only dream of.
If you absolutely want a branko that suits your taste go to the source and watch them all run. Costs more upfront but will save you more $$ down the road cause you got exactly what you wanted without trial and error.

Fuzz makes a good point about Branko's - everyone thinks they make so much money off of pups - but stop for a second and do the math. Even if they do sell 100 pups a year and if they get $400 per pup that is only $40,000. Now minus all the expenses they incur w/ running pens, trialing beagles, promoting their hounds, vet expenses, food, etc. and you can see they are not getting rich. Probably most would consider Branko the largest and most well known kennel in beagles today and to think they may only clear $20,000 if that, after all their hard work. Boys - no one gets rich in this sport...not even Branko.

This is my opinion on Branko;
"When it comes to beagles, Branko is not the beginning nor is Branko the end."

Naw, the true measure of great hounds is ability to pass the traits and do it consistantly. Branko's probally throw some of the most consistant traits of any of the big blood lines out there across the whole litter. When it comes to making an out cross a branko dog that has the traits you want is close to money in the bank across the whole litter. That is the sign of a great bloodline titles or no titles.

thats a very good and accurate post... and it is why i keep the line i do, because they consistantly throw the traits i like. this post asked a question... just because my opinion (and others) may not be the same as yours, dont ruin the post and jump all over me. i answered honestly from my experiences as did you... leave it at that. my # is 815-303-2569 if anyone ever needs to bash me.
