Have a couple of guys that are wanting to hunt somewhere in the Midwest. Would like to here from you guys that have made the trip to hunt out there ,as well as, the people living and hunting these areas. Which places are the most "User Friendly"? Would like to hunt public property, but we are willing to take anything into consideration. Thanks in advance.

Iowa rabbits

Have hunted Iowa the last 3 years. I live in NW Indiana. We take I-80 west as far as Des Moines. Have hunted from Knoxville south and east back to Ill/Iowa line. Washington Iowa is only 3 1/2 hours from my home.
Get yourself an Iowa Sportsman's Atlas for $20.00. Show's all counties, roads, motels and state properties. sportsmansatlas.com.
Lots of state, county and municipal land. Have yet to see another hunter.
e-mail me or pm me and I'll give you my phone number.

We have an excellent rabbit population here, and not much competition. Have your buddies get in touch with me, I'm always eager to hook a fellow rabbit hunter up. Almost unlimited public hunting around here.

I'm looking to go to Iowa in October, January & February rabbit hunting. I'm also looking for some more good counties to hunt in that also have hotel/motels or even a hunting lodge that a group of about 6 hunters can sleep and prepare meals in. If anyone thinks it might be better, we can also bring a camper.

I'll probably be taking my whole kennel in my "Beagle Buggy Trailer" pictured bellow.

Any help would surely be appreciated!

I wrote an article for the American Beagler about our trip to Iowa. Lots of places to hunt. Very friendly people. Lots of rabbits. While hunting on private land we were almost shot by some crazy deer hunters. Here came this huge buck across a field to our north and here came a pickup chasing it with idiots standing in the bed shooting over the cab. That was the only bad incident we had.

I live and hunt here in Kansas. The best hunting is out in the western part of the state. Theres something like a million acres of public and walk in hunting throughout the state, with lots of rabbits. Also rabbit season stays in year around.

Sounds like Kansas might be the place to go with year round season.

I ordered an Iowa Sportsman’s Atlas yesterday for $20.00. The most resent version that’s out is the 2002 Version. I was told that in August they’re would be a new updated version out. I will also order one then.

Thanks to all that have helped so far, and for the ones that are still looking for info for me I sure do appreciate it. We are hoping to go to Iowa in early October.

I have several questions pertaining to vaccine requirements for dogs in Iowa:

1) What vaccines are your dogs required to have in Iowa?
2) If certain vaccines are required, what kinds of proof of the vaccinations (rabbi tags, paperwork of shot records) are legally necessary to have with you when hunting and traveling through the state with your dogs?
3) Does anyone know of anyone or their dogs being checked in the state of Iowa for proof of vaccines?
4) I’m from Indiana and I personally vaccinate for all the common things dog owners vaccinate for in Indiana. I also have rabbi tags for all my dogs. So the only proof of shot records that I would have is the rabbi tags. In Indiana the only proof you’re required to have is rabbi tags. What I’m asking is if rabbi tags are enough proof of the necessary shot records in Iowa?

While we were in Iowa the DNR checked us and didn't ask anything about the dogs and none of them had their rabies tags on.

I would think tags would be enough. I have never been checked.
