Dew Claws

Post by dmbarnes »

What is the oldest age that that dew claws can be removed without going to the Vet? I missed one in my current litter.

I have taken dew claws off grown dogs with the smallest, strong, rubber band you can find . If you can not find any small enough you can double the band and you can also cut the band and tie it in a knot tight around the dew claw it will come right off in a few days, takes longer if there is a bone in the dew claw. I have never had a problem doing it this way.

well, you are late but, if you use the crush method with hemostats you might get it off if the pup isn't too big. If he is.. just leave it. It'll be ok.

You can use a pair of diagonal pliers that are used for cutting wire at about any age if you have the stomach for it. I cut them at about three weeks once with no problem.

Gus, Did you have a lot of bleeding at that age? I did use the rubber bands once on a dog that was over a year old. Didn't have any problems with that. My vet said he would only charge $30 to remove a pair of dew claws. Sounds reasonable to me.

I don't remember them bleeding much. A few drops maybe. Not nearly as much a a cut ear that is torn while hunting.

Me personally I would just spend the $30
Seen a 5 mo old Dog get one tore off one time.
Wasnt pretty :(
if it was as Easy as Cuttin Em off with a pocket knife everyone would do it.....
They are capable depending on the size of the vien and growth of the bone of bleeding profusly.............LOTS
From Field to Show and Show to Field the way it should be

I have cut them at four months. but it gets bloody. usually cut them at two weeks. this ensures they are strong enough to take it.

Next litter I have I'll make a video of how to do this simply and easily with no cutting.. just crushing with hemostats. 5 days is the perfect time to do it. Hardly any bleeding and almost no crying from the puppies. No infections either.

dew claws

I crush them with hemostats at 2 days old. I have been lucky in the past and only had a few that even had them.
