questin about pregnant beagle

Post by kodiac »

I had my dog bred a couple weeks ago and have hunted her several times since and as was well. I took her out today and she absolutely would not hunt showed no intrest at all and looked like she was looking for a place to lay down. She normally is a great hunter and tears it up. She shows no signs of being sick and everything seems fine except she just seems really laid back right now. Is there any way to know if the breeding took before she starts "showing", Has anyone else ever had this happen to a dog they had bred? This is the first dog i have had bred.

I haven't ever had any problems like you have mentioned. However, I would suspect that dogs have the same reactions as humans while pregnant. Could be "morning sickness" and she just didn't feel well. If she was conditioned before she was bred, then I would just take her out for walks to keep her in shape. Otherwise, you can see when she perks up a little and take her out depending on her attitude.

Now, if she gets sluggish and starts acting puny, then I would suggest a trip to the vet.

I have one bred a few weeks ago with her first litter, and had the same problem immediately following the breeding. I only tried to take her hunting once, she was so tired and showing no interest in anything but trying to get me to hold her. The first time I had a bitch act like that. She's been sleeping very deeply up until recently, and I'm not going to force her to exert herself. It's a heavy load on their little bodies, some handle it much better than others. She's not quitting on you, just needs rest and a calmer pace.

I agree with Emery! All my females seem to go through phases where they are a little slower and more tender then when they're not pregnant. I have always thought they were having "morning sickness"

Her body is working hard trying to grow pups...and at certain stages of pregnancy, like implantation, you especially don't want them getting a high temperature. Let her rest and grow your pups...pregnancy tires a girl out!! :baby: :baby: :baby: :baby: :baby:
