e-collars

Post by dark corner kennel »

There's been alot of post on shocking dogs for running trash or to make him come. Occasionally someone says they stop their's from cold trailing. Most folks are afraid to shock a dog while smelling rabbit however I recently watched a man's dogs run who made this statement and they were impressive. The first bark turned into a screaming pack and when they finally lost the rabbit, there was not another babble and he said he obtained this with a shock collar.
I also heard a arha judge say he had a man stack his dog for bench and then the man backed up a step allowing the dog to stand alone.
How widespread are these uses of collars? What other uses does the beagle community practice? Anyone have successful or unsuccessful experiences?

I've used Tri-Tronics units for the past 25 years on coondogs and beagles and love them. In fact I'm not sure I'd still be running dogs if there weren't shock collars.I DO remember trying to run down numerous bearhounds, cathounds, coonhounds and beagles when no one had ever heard of a shock collar and I was ALOT younger then and it still wasn't much fun. We'd catch them and whip them, beat them, squirt breaking scent all over them, put them in a barrel with a deer hide and a bunch of rocks and roll them down a steep hill, pen them with male billy goats that would over haul them, hook up deer glands to an electric fence charger, set mouse traps with deer scent on them around where the pups would find them and snap their noses,etc.,etc. There wasn't much we didn't try back then. Some were sucessfull and some didn't seem to make much differance in the hound at all.
Shock collars changed all that. If in the hands of someone who uses it right a hound can be pretty easily broke without too much of a trash.
I've kept hounds for the past 34 years and I've also found the Tri-Tronics bark collars to be quite effective. Much as i love to listen to a hound run I CAN'T stand a noisey one in the pen.

E collars are the AWESOME  If your dog can't take the juice (in a constructive and level headed way of course)
then it's time to look for another dog . I'd say with enough time and patients it would be amazing what you could
do .

Well if you are talking about my dogs being impressive I appreciate it, but I don't think you are. And, as you saw, the ecollar is not much help in catching a dog that has not been trained right with it. That dog has, now, and I bet he will be a snap to catch next time out.

I have accidentally shocked dogs way too many times while smelling a rabbit and never caused one to hang it up for good, but I know of a few that have been accidentally broke from running rabbits that were pretty good before some nut hit the button on them.

I have been given 2 dogs that were so shy that they had to be caught in a live trap in the starting pen. I got both of them so I could catch them by using a shock collar. It's really pretty simple and easy, but without the collar not worth the trouble. Now will the dog still obey without the collar? Probably not, they are smart and know when you can't zap them. People say their beagles are collar broke but what they really mean is they are collar wise.

Speaking of shy, some people will tell you it is caused by a recessive gene and if you breed shy to shy all the pups will be shy. That's another of the many crocks of **** you can read on dog boards because I have done it and all the pups were not shy in any way.

Some dogs can take a light bump for cold trailing, some can't. I have 1 dog that I bump for cold trialing and it helps.

i have a hard headed female i wont run with out a collar. little juice makes her handle like a dream, take the collar off and she goes def. i can deal with a little cold trailing if they produce most of the time.

The guy I hunt with has a male that comes out of the truck barking. He will trail way too much unless he gives him a quick jolt right out of the truck. Once he does that he is good for the rest of the day. I saw this dog minus out in a little pack trial in a little over 9 minutes. He is a different dog completely after his eye opener.

Just remember, All hounds have "tendencies" good/bad, that they teach other hounds or pass on to their pups through the genes. If your over-riding these "tendencies" with electricial shock, expect them to be with us in ever increasing numbers for a looong time... ;)
