Dog keeps licking his hind legs

Post by jk6140 »

Just like the title says he wont stop. The hair is starting to get thin in spots. There are no sores or wounds. He is doing it on both sides. I am always checking him for ticks. I have moved him to a differnt kennel. None of my other dogs have this problem. Even his ex kenel mate @ the time had no issue w/ it. It has not been extremely hot this year and I did not have this problem last year. Any suggestions or tips would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like he may have a pinched nerve. Where his legs feel like they are asleep and tingle.. He could be showing signs of a pinched sciatic nerve.
TC did you mean a pinched sciatica nerve? That could definitely cause tingling in hip/legs.
Yup thats What i meant thanks for the catch i Didnt mean the Dog Was Psychotic although the last time I pinched my Sciatic nerve it about made me psycho!!!!!!!

It was just a question, nothing was meant by it. I agree with tc, it sounds like a pinched nerve.

Some problems work from the inside/out and may not be seen. I'm sure my old friend Roy Clinkard would say, give him a dusting of Flower of Sulfur, an he'll get right in a few days. Sulfur heals many skin ailments and is a great blood purifier, like hives, some things irritate just under the skin... ;)

jk, you can check for that by gently examining his vertebrae one at a time especially near the end of his spine/hip area, if there is a problem he should react to having that area touched.

I will give him a check tonight when I feed him. I have still been running him. I have not seen any sign of pain. Should I not be running him? I wouldnt want to hrt him even more.

jk6140 , I personally think you were rude to Reddog1 as I seriously doubt
he was doing anything except trying to be helpful .

I've been told Ivomec would take care of skin irritations sometimes
too but not positive . A good malethon / kennel dip wouldn't hurt .

I may have been a little rude. The way I took it seemed as though he thought I never took my dogs running. I dont know, it just sounded bad. If I misunderstood..........I'm sorry. I'm not trying to get into a pissing match.

I appreciate all the input. Holpefully I will be able to get this problem resolved before hunting season. Again thanks alot......

Jk6140, I was not offended by your comment, I know a few guys here in Mi. that won't run there hounds when it's hot and some of their dogs lick their legs and paws out of boredom and they get sores. I probably would have taken my comment the same way.

Checked my dogs back like you described and showed no sign of any pain. I am thinking that he may have some sort of skin irritation. I have noticed a little bit of dry skin in the area he is licking. I am thinking of doing a kennel dip. What kind/brand would you suggest? Any other suggestions?

what if you were to wash him with some good dog shampoo with warm water. Massage the area he keeps licking with warm water and shampoo. It's worth a shot and won't cost that much.
