Got surrounded by coyote's (I think)
I couldn't believe it. I ran my dogs this weekend at a nice big field I always run on. Well a half hour into it the dogs pushed a rabbit up a hill into a little wood thicket. Once they got in there after the rabbit I heard this awful barking. it's hard for me to describe but a wierd barking. I thought one of the dogs was hurt at first then I thought it was a fight with a strange dog. My females came in with their tails between thier legs My big male hadn't come in. I kept calling and calling the barking continued. He finally came in. I leashed them up and continued away from the woods and barking I got maybe 75 yards away when the awful barking was in front of us. About 50 yards away something was barking at us very loud. Like a bark howl. I'm not sure if it was the same animal. But it had to run pretty fast to come around us like that. I was in the middle of tall weeds and thick brush so I couldn't see a thing. I was looking over both shoulders. I was a little frightened. I didn't have a stick or a hand gun nothing. So I walked slowly thru the brush and started yelling to try and back whatever was out there away from me. I still wanted to run dogs so I tried again. I walked a good 5 to 6 hundred yard away from that area all the way to the other side of the big huge field. Let the dogs go 5 minutes later the rabbit was up and running dogs sounding good then all the sudden that awful bark howl was back and dogs came a running towards me all scared. Well I got the heck out of there that time.

Had that happen to me,not a good situation for youre hounds, you stand a chance but the hounds they will become lunch.I left went got a johnny stewart set up and we killed three yotes in thirty minutes that was fun. go to that spot and call those yotes in and kill them before they kill one of your hounds.
Re: Got surrounded by coyote's (I think)
We were sitting on the back porch Friday night with the dogs. We began hearing yipping and howling from a pack of coyotes. It sounded like 5 or more.
A neighbor to the South has sheep and straight across the road in front of the house to the North the neighbor has cattle.
It sounded like the coyotes were heading our way. The wife got a little panicky and so did I. I brought the dogs in the house pretty quickly through the garage walk-in door while my wife came in the sliding glass doors at the porch. The neighboring dogs began barking and the coyotes shut up but we knew they were still in the area.
With coyotes and mountain lions in the area and now reports of black bears I've decided that at when I go out at night I need to start carrying the Mossberg 500 12 gauge with the 18.5" barrel and pistol grip, and some #1 buckshot and slugs.

it is getting so bad in some of my spots ,I do not hardly dare to run anymore.Everytime we run at night they come in,and quick.
Re: Got surrounded by coyote's (I think)
I'm a little afraid to go back now. I don 't want any of my dogs hurt. We are so close to rabbit season and it's not worth the risk. I may have to lay them up till rabbit season which starts Oct 1st. I really don't want to do that but If I have to then I have to.
I may start looking for other places to run. As long as I can get them out a few more times before rabbit season it will be fine. When rabbit season gets into full swing they will be ran the snot out of.
Still can't believe how they ganged up on us like that. I don't know how many there were. I guess they have pups close by and they wanted us out. They pretty much ran us out of there.
Their is no way I can kill them on this property it's within city limits. So no shooting. Believe me if I could I would. It would only take one morning of calling them in and it would be over with. But nope now they have a nice field to live in and eat all the rabbits.

Joeyman can you put out snares for them? If so that might be another way to get rid of some of them. It does sound like they might have had pups close.
Re: Got surrounded by coyote's (I think)
It's not a good feeling losin your running grounds to coyotes. I have stopped running at my favorite spot because the risk was too great and not worth losing a dog over. Everytime I turn out in that spot, daylight or dark, the coyotes instantly come in on them. It was ok when they would yip and howl because I could just fire a shot in the air or put myself between the yotes and dogs to keep them away. For whatever reason the coyotes have started to come in on the dogs silent and I busted one crouched down along the swamp waiting on the dogs, who were heading right towards him, in which case I assume he would have pounced on them....not fun. Unfortunately, there is now corn surrounding this running area and there is no way I could get to the dogs in time if something went wrong. So now I drive 45 minutes to run rather than right across from my house.
The biggest problem I have seen with the coyotes around my house is they are no longer scared of human sound. Even after killing off a few they still come in and after you scare them off they just run out in the field and watch you leash up the dogs, howling the whole time.

Sounds like you need to get a dog that will decoy the coyote into shooting range.
Re: Got surrounded by coyote's (I think)
All States should put a Bounty on Coyotes, that would thin them out. I think WV stocked them here so the State Road wouldn't have to pick up dead Deer off the road,or maybe to control Deer pops and Turkey. What ever the reason they deny it but people have seen them stocking them. Coyotes are nothing but a nusance, they will also attack small kids.

THATS EXACTLY WHO BROUGHT THEN INTOO KENTUCKY, IS THE FOX HUNTERS.........REASON WHY I KNOW THIS IS BECASUE MY GRANDFATHER HAS RAN FOXHOUNDS ALL OF HIS LIFE AND HE WOULD GO OFF AND GET THEM AND BRING THEM IN, THE FOX HUNTERS THOUGHT IT WAS OK BECAUSE THEY WHERE PUTTING THEM INTO PENS, BUT MY PAPAW SAID WHAT STARTED HAPPENING IS THAT THEY WOULD LITERALLY GET RAN TO DEATHE BY THE FOXHOUNDS IN THE PEN, AND THE PEN OWNER WOULD JUST TURN IT LOOSE BECAUSE HE DIDNT WANT THE DOGS CATCHING IT SO THEY WOULD JUST TURN IT LOOSE INTO THE WILD, AND MY PAPAW SAID THEY ALL THOUGBHT THAT THEY WOULD JUST KINDA GO 0OFF AND GET KILED OR DIE OR SOMETHING BUT WHAT THEY DIDNT KNOW WAS THAT THERE IS REALLY NOTHING ABOVE THEM IN KENTUCKY THAT IS REALLY A PREDIATOR TO THE YOTES, SO INSTEAD OF THEM DIEING THEY ENEDED UP REPRODUCING AND THAT IS REALLY WHAT GOT THEM SO THICK HERE, I DONT KNOW IF THE STATE HAS EVER RELEASED THEM BUT WE HAVE AN ABUNDANCE OF THEM, THE REASON WHY THEY ARE MULTIPLYING SO FAST IS PLAINLY THEY BREED JUST LIKE DOGS AND WILL SOMETIMES HAVE 1 OR 2 LITTERS A YEAR AND PROBABLEY HAVE AT LEAST 6-12 PUPS EACH LITTER AND THEY HAVE NO PRDIATOR THAT WILL KILL ENOUGH OF THEM TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE, THERE ONLYY PREDIATOR IZS US, MY I GET SURRONDED BY THEM EVERY TIME I GO ALMOST HERE, I HAD A BIG RED TO RUN TO MY DOGS DOWN A ROAD YELPING WHILE MY MALE WAS STROKING A RABBITT, NEEDLESS TO SAY HE WANT RUN TO MY DOGS OR NOBODY ELSES ANY MORE, MY AR-15 .223 CALIBER THAT I JUST HAPPENED TO HAVE THAT DAY BECASUE I WAS SHOOTING AROUND SOME YOUNG DOGS TOOK REALLY GOOD CARE OF THST YOTE, MY UNCLE GOT 2 OF HIS DOGS CHEWWED UP REALLY BAD BACK DURING SPRING WHEN THE YOTES WHERE FIRST HAVING THERE PUPS......I WISH I COULD FIND EVERY YOTE THAT I COULD EVERY LITTER OF PUPS THEY HAVE AND FINISH THEM BUT I CANT, ALSO I KNOW SOME FARMERS THAT HAVE SOME POISEN THA THEY USE ON THEM BUT WITH USING POISEN YOUM CANNOT RUN YOUR DOGS THERE, WAY TO RISKY O YHOUR DOGS GETTING INTO THE POISEN INSTEASD OF THE YOTES, BUT ANYWAY I SAY KILL ALL OR THEY WILL EVVNTUALLY KILL YOUR HOUNDS, I KILL EVERYONE THAT I CAN WHEN I SEE THEM REGAURDLESS.

I have a good buddy who will swear on a stack of bibles he saw a truck releasing coyotes about 8 year ago somewhere here in WV (cant remember exactly where, I believe he said, he was trout fishing at the time) I've also always "heard" that the insurance companies had something to do with coyotes.

I'd head back out there w/ your deer rifle and a rabbit in distress call and bust a few yotes. My experience is that yotes will move into an area for awhile, then they disappear and a couple months later they are back.....they come and go.
