Loose lipped hounds

Post by Jernizzle »

I have a 4 year old male that I consider to be loose lipped. He runs a great line but he barks too much. Sometimes he lets out a little "locator" bark when he is away from the pack which causes them to come to him. Then he goes back to hunting. One or twice he has opened on a track and moved about 20 yard on it, one of my colder nosed females joined him, but after my older (hotter nosed)female didnt join in he just quit and started hunting again. What is his deal? Is he cold trailing or just being a dumb a$$? What can I do about it?

Im guessing this hound has a good nose, or at least a low excitability level. Barking before the rabbit is jumped is a huge fault for some people but to me its not that big of deal if the dog doesnt bog down. As long as they keep hunting and move on I dont see it as that disruptive. Usually dogs like this jump lots of rabbits. If thats the case I wouldnt worry to much about it. Dogs like this will get picked up fast in the trials so I wouldnt bother trialing him. There is not much your going to do to correct a 4 year old dog. The biggest problem you will have is this getting worse with age. When dogs get 6+ years old and cant compete with the younger dogs they tend to bark out of place more and lag back. If you notice that to be the case this hound may do more harm to your pack than good.

My house dog is a bone head! She will open and bark away she has gotten terrible, The rest of the pack doesnt even pay attention to her anymore, I think most beagles in a pack learn who the liars are! The house dog dont come with us very often just when I feel bad for her cause she trys hard!
