sgc wrote:He was supposedly an average to a little above average dog at best, according to the older beagle experts still around today. Not a world beater. He may have produced better than he was, but I wonder if good dogs today aren't really getting whatever qualities their breeders are breeding for from somewhere else in the breeding and attributing it to Dingus. Its been a while since I've had Dingus bred dogs but IMO I would say maybe that wierd squall/scream mouth comes from him. I have seen a lot of fair weather nosed dogs (not strong nosed dogs) from supposedly Dingus breedings. I also think he may have put some line control into his offsprings.
that was what I remember the old timers saying on an older post. doesnt really matter as his offspring have benefited many.
I believe the dog placed in every trial he was in ,so Im sure he was pretty tough ,tough enough to have caught Brankos eye .He was called a Rabbit Machine

I never had seen Dingus MacRae run myself. Over the years I have talked to 25 or 30 individuals that did see him run, owned litter mates to him or pups out of him and/or bred to him. And most of them are still very much alive. The one consistent thing that all of them together had to say was that he was hands down the hardest hunting dog they have ever witnessed in a field. They also said he had a loud bawl mouth and when he was really “hot” he would “double clutch” his barks and would follow the bawl up with a couple of quick chops. He had exceptional line control for his speed as a smaller dog. But his two main qualities were his hunt and checking ability.
If we think about it, anybody that is now of the age 48 or older could have seen Dingus in his prime. He was still at stud in 1981/82, and at that time he was considered to have been the most consistent male to have ever hit the US Large Pack circuit. He was trialed in New York, Maine and Massachusetts. He was trialed on Hare and Cottontail and he did place in every trial that he was ever entered in. I was told after his first few trials of consistently placing, those that judged him referred to him as “The Rabbit Machine”. After several more trials and some of them in really bad conditions and he continued to place regardless of the many different conditions, different places, different judges and switching back and forth from Hare to Cottontail, they then started referring to him as “The Rabbit Machine that couldn’t be stopped”.
For people that have never seen a dog run, you have to go by the word of those that have seen the dog, the dog’s accomplishments and trialing record and what the dog has reproduced. It is my opinion that all of these things combined make him much more than just an average dog. In 2005 he was inducted into the Large Pack Beagling Hall of Fame, along with a bulk of the dogs that he derived from.
I understand that there are some males that only produce when they are bred to certain females, but with Dingus MacRae I don’t believe this was the case. I actually think he “carried” some females. Meaning, some of those females were bred to different males and produced nothing, but when they were bred to Dingus they produced good dogs. I was told, “you could have bred Dingus MacRae to a poodle and it’s pups would still out hunt most beagles”.
His Great Grand Sire was Mt. Zion Pete, who was out of Dagwood’s Labaan, but it was Labaan that you will see multiple times in Dingus’ pedigree, along with Fish Creek, Concord, Pleasant Run & Yellow Creek.
Northway dogs “Northway Spur” was loaded with Mt. Zion Pete, Lar-May Toastmaster and other dogs that were directly related to the Sire & Dam of Dingus MacRae, so they had a lot in common.

I have to throw in 2 cents for the infamous Art Beamer, IFC Maple Lane Itchy Bawls was off FC Coma Spike Driver MaCrea, son of Dingus.
Jim, Itchys sister ( Frosty Bawls) is in Clems pedigree fairly close is she not?
Anyway i know Beamer very well and he would want his Itchy Bawls recognized.

This male Slim is 9 years old by the way and seems to be showing his age lately. I think I might take a Buzzsaw female to him as soon as she comes in and hope for the best. I have a male "Brady" out of this male "Slim" that I LOVE and is a JUMP dawg. Yesterday we hunted and jumped 12 rabbits and he jumped 9 or 10 of them from daylight till dark he never stoped or quite. He's Northway Spur on the bottom side.

The greatest quailities that dingus put in the hounds today was reproducing power of top quaility hounds, especially the the females. He put nose, control, and brains into his off spring. The dogs were a little hard to start but once they started it was like they have been running for a year. His best quality he reproduced was his checking ability. Alot of dogs out of that line would put out of the pack and turn on a check without losing a step and leave dogs swingin g to catch them. Alot of the dogs out of this line had excellant checking ability. I talked to Lyle Chamberland years ago about the lengendary brace in up state between dingus ma crae and andirondoc bobby, I guess several of the guys stayed around to watch. The two dogs cut down to a brace and were ran another two hours with several people watching. Bobby won. Would have loved to been there to see to of the most promident reproducers run the the beagle industry.
i am positive that Itchy was an IFC, and Spike Driver was FC and Frosty had no title other than Itchys sister.
Dan stated the facts on Al he was a FTCH and he deserved way more he had 2 wins in the US. I handled Al in NY for a while for Dan when he had kidney disease he was a very special dog and will always have fond memories of him. Al wasn't your have to have the front flashy 15 inch male he was always within a nose reach of it though and god forbid your dog missed the corner cause Al was there to get you. He had a very limited number of breedings twice i believe to Northfield Misty and once to Mape lane Frosty Bawls.
"The Good Die Young" apparently the great do to!
