I would cull the male and leave the shock collar off the female for a while. Some dogs will not handle a lot of shocking. Running backwards is a problem that can be corrected without a shock collar, if the bitch has a brain.
Cold trailing is acceptable in some areas on some game. I doubt you can cure cold trailing. If that is not acceptable you probably should cull them both.

my lead dog now, when a yearling, would backtrack some away from the hole, i would follow along and "nip" him a little with tritronics, hes 4 now and hasnt done it anymore. i think a lot of negatives are corrected as a hound matures.
i have never had time to solo and have always started mine getting used to hauling, getting to know each ones personality, and etc... then when they are strong enough and big enough ,i will use my older broke hounds to get em on rabbits. ive never collar broke one in the yard in 30 yrs. ,collars go on when theyre loaded. like soloing, never had time for it.
imo, a person can teach them so much and the rest is left up to hound,if its in em itll come out.
ive had some like the 2 this post started about, and pups like this are a pain in the ...
sounds like u got a job on hand.
"they are almost 16months old" so really i shouldnt say "pups". If they were mine,id find another home for them. imo dogs this age if theyve been given the opportunity to be in the brush since 8 months or so, should be running with the old dogs.
seems every post started on here anymore, ends up with someone's smart remarks or whatever. let every post be, to help a guy when he asks, lift each one up when hes down.
ive beagled for 30+ yrs and dont know it all, dont do everything correct all the time and have learned a lot by reading here and asking fellow hunters advice.
anyway good luck however u decide to go with them, and if they dont work out, good luck with those in the future.

Hi,
was reading your post, I was wondering how long have you had these dogs? How many times have they been out running in the last 6 months? Pups can be really frustrating but there are no shortcuts to making a good dog. Takes hours and hours. Back tracking from an old dog is totally unacceptable, but is not uncommon for a dog with little expiernce to make a mistake. I have found lots of hours down running will correct a lot of problems, opening early is one, not every dog but sometimes. They are opening because they are excited, the more they run they will learn what tracks they can handle.
Some bloodlines are more competitve than others, lots of hunters want a dog that pushes for the front. Sounds like you may want to go with more of a progressive style dog. One thing I always try to remember. Shocking a dog is like spanking your kid, dont do it when your angry. catch the pup and put it away. E collar is a great tool. Repetition is what I have found works best, being consistant not the number(intensity) but doing same correction everytime. Good luck and good hunting.

Which bloodline

There are many bloodlines out there that might suit your needs but I would recommend
you go watch thier grandparents , parents or siblings from that particular bloodline
as it would be hard for anyone to know the exact speed , desire and traits you may
be looking for .
Some bloodlines are realllly finicky . Need ran up almost daily , can't handle pressure ,
can't handle correction and have no desire to please thier owner ... I personally stay
away from that and steer more toward a working mans hound . To each his own !!!

Which bloodline is more of a working mans hound???

Line control is relative to what you expect out of dog but it is not unusual to have a pup try and out run an older dog. Solo time will help some but a dog that is competitive will always be competitive to some degree. They are like athletes and it's hard to not want to win the race and to a beagle the race is to catch the rabbit. Competitiveness when harnessed correctly can be good thing but sometimes it will make a dog look simple. The running around in circles in front of the other dog might have me scratching my head but as long as he is trying to go forward and not backward I could live with that. Now a dog opening up 5 minutes before the rabbit gets jumped and backtracking is another thing that will probably only get worse with age.

Coming back to you and sitting at your feet after you shocked it on #3, well some dogs can't take that much correction and lighter shock is all they need.

As far as what line of dogs have good line control that depends on what you want. I've witnessed some Brace hounds that couldn't cover 10 feet in an hour. Others breeds can run like the wind!! Just because a dog carries a big name or title that doesn't mean it will work for you so the trick is don't spend to much time and money on what doesn't suit you!
