How old is to old to breed a female?

Post by cheatmountainman »

I have a female that I would like pups from one more time she is almost nine in pretty good shape and only been bred one other time about 4 years ago. She does need to lose a few pounds other then that she is healthy. She has a super nose and good line control with about a 7 for speed and would love to get another one with her traits.Image

cheatmountainman - You certainly present an interesting question. I am not sure that anyone has a definte answer . Like you, I had a female that was 9 years old, a great little rabbit dog that I had gunned over for a good 7 years but never raised pups from her. She was bred to a nice 2 year old dog and had three healthy pups. She had no health issues carrying the pups but developed mastitis after whelping. That was a minor thing and easily taken care of. In this case, she was not too old to breed.
I know of other cases where two older dogs were mated and the female did not take. May have been a fertility problem with the male or female. If your female is healthy, I would make the breeding. Her clock is ticking and she may not be around for 2 or 3 more seasons.
Good luck with your decision.

It depends on the dog and the shape it's in if she is 9 and in descent shape she should be fine but make sure you take precautions during and after she has the pups to make sure she gets plenty of nutrients you can get a vet to give you some prenatal vitamins for dogs just like women who are in there late 30's will take when they are pregnant just helps them and the pups stay good and healthy when she gets close to having the pups you might wanna set something up with a vet so they can be there or you can have her at the clinic just to be on the safe side.
