Strike Dog Vs Jump dog

A JUMP dog is looking for a rabbit; a STRIKE dog is looking for a track. Jump dogs do not open much at all (if any) before the rabbit is up; Strike dogs will open and work a track with mouth before the rabbit is up. That is how I define the two terms. A GOOD dog is just that (good) and both styles can put rabbits in the game bag. But GREAT jump dogs are very rare indeed!!!!!!

Alot of times your jump dog, when working a check, is more worried about where the rabbit HAS WENT...... and your strike dog is more worried about where the rabbit HAS BEEN.

Totally different styles of dogs in my opinion. A person could go on and on about this topic.

To me that is the most clarified explaination I've heard

I know that we talk beagles, however, my son and I run our dogs together periodicly. He owns a fiest, and I own a beagle.
When they are out together, the fiest is always the 'Jump' dog, whereas my beagle is primarally a 'strike' dog. They work together very well; this applies to c.tails as well as hare.

I agree with Matt, I consider them to be completely different styles of dogs and I think it just goes back to their own personality.

And it's wrong to assume that a strike dog can't run a track well. In fact I would be willing to bet that most "strike" dogs will run one better than a "jump" dog will because they tend to look for the rabbit with their nose............that's generally why they make a good strike dog in the first place. They're the ones that you see, fast or slow, with their nose pinned to the ground all the time trying to cut a track somewhere. And sometimes the bad part about that is I've seen plenty of dogs that get so intent on the track they don't even see the rabbit most of the time when they do jump it. I'd prefer to have one that pays enough attention to catch that part too. It's hard to find a dog with the brains, personality and disposition to "have it all" isn't it???????

So what i am getting from this statement is a jump dog is air scenting and a strike dog is ground scenting. If a jump dog is looking for a rabbit, then he is air scenting. If a jump dog is worried about where the rabbit went in a check then he has his head up air scenting. Now my question is, how does this jump dog run a track ?

Salzer, I think this is where the generalities start to come in. A lot of guys will say a truly great jump dog isn't always an ace when it comes to being a track dog............true or not I guess I don't really know. But I do know that you hear a lot of fellas say it's hard to find a dog that is really good at both so if and/or when you do get one you better treat it like gold. To be perfectly honest I've never owned what you all call a true jump dog so it's hard for me to compare other than by listening to others explain it.
