I had 2 pups last year that wouldn't pack at 10 months old even if the dogs were running 20 ft from them.It drove me crazy as I had raised them from 8 weeks old and really wanted them to do well.I put them in a rabbit pen with some other young dogs for a week after hunting season and the day I took them out they were jumping their own rabbit as well would sprint to the pack as soon as they opened up.I don't know if it was the pen or if the light bulb just came on for them but I'm a very happy guy for being patient as that was very hard for me.I spoke with a houndsmen that trialed and raised dogs for 40 years and he said wouldn't start them until they were 7 or 8 months old.He said at 6 months old they just had too much puppy in them for him.I'm sure some may start earlier than 6 months and I know some guys who gave up on pups and later regreted it as they turned out to be great dogs.Lots of luck as you have a really good lookin pup!!

Thanks all for all the imfo, help, props....You're a great group of guys
I ran him solo last night, He did good, I walked with him just before dark when the rabbits come out to feed in the 2track, seen 2 put him on both tracks (he did not see the rabbit at all) he hit the scent and he was off with good mouth, ran the first for about 150 yards, 2nd about 80-90 yards......
I am going to run him again tonight solo

Sounds like he is doing well ! I usually don't even mess with them until they are 7-8 months old. If he is doing this much already he is doing good! Keep feeding him tracks. Sounds like he is improving with every track. Won't be long and he will be circling them.

I have a 6 1/2 month old male pup that is site chasing and running a scent trail (throwing good mouth) about 30-40 yards, to me this isn't to bad for a 6 1/2 month old pup,
What you typed to start off your topic is probably the key. It is a 6 1/2 month old male pup and in (most) of my experiences starting pups the male usually take longer to start. I have had litter mate pups and the females would start at 5--6 months old and the males would be 8--9 months old before they started but in the end some of the males would end up being better than the females that started early. My advice would be to just keep taking him and feeding him rabbit tracks and one day the light will click on in his head and he will be off and running.

Rick G beat me to it. The best hound i own didn't start until he was 11 months old. Had no interest in rabbits until then. I have gone thru periods of time when events happened in my life that didn't allow me to work pups when they needed work but when they got up to 10-14 months old they took off. You really can't tell exactly what a beagle is going to do (hunt, speed, style) until he's a year or more. You get a good idea what he will do earlier if you work him like you are working that pup, but pups are like kids. They are not as predictable as we would like them to be. If you give up on the pup, I will take him.

Thanks for all the imfo/help guys.... :check:
I took him again last night and he seen a rabbit cross the road when the older dogs circled him and he took off after it (threw some mouth running after it) He then hit the track, took him all of 7-8 secs and he was trailing and throwing good mouth but it didnt last long as the elders past him up, but all in all he is doing good IMO, I am keeping him around for awhile, and Guys I highly appreciate the help, imfo, I seriously think I would have given up on him not knowing what I have and could have lost a good one ! I love this site and the people in it, this is where I will ask all my ???'s from now on (yes this is a warning, I will have a lot of them lol.. ), You all are great and again TY !!... :check:

That's what my wife says- boys start slower than girls! :D I have a well bred male that's tad over 9 months. He can run a dead rabbit drag or a rabbit scented rag like nobodys business, & is sight chasing & opening up, but is really hesitant about packing up with my other hounds. He finally did tonight. He's about to drive me nuts cuz last year I had a female that was runnin with the big dogs at 6 months. He just acts like he still has a lot of pup in him. I'm hoping he'll pick it up this fall. I do believe that all dogs are diff. & progress differently. In any event I'd keep taking him out there, feeding him rabbit tracks, & work with him at least through one huntin season. Give him time. Don't give up yet!!!

They are all individuals. I have two littermates, one smaller than the other, less aggressive. The smaller pup was in on every race this morning but not opening. The big pup played with a plastic water bottle. I'm not concerned about either. They just need time in the weeds and both will be fine. Pups are pups. I have gotten rid of some that made very good hounds due to my impatience. I have learned a little in my 50 years, 40 of those years I have owned beagles. Now I am much more patient with pups in the field. They need very little more than opportunity to do what they have been bred to do.
