And Joeyman Thinks He Has Problems!!!!!!!
Joey when you get Thunder broke from eating rabbits just load up and head to Ky. and spend the winter here helping me. I probably am starting into season with the biggest hill to climb I have ever had. I have one broke gundog and she is with pups for maybe another 3 or 4 weeks. I have 5 unbroke, fired up, crazy, mule headed young dogs to hunt with. If by some lucky chance I don't kill them or they or they don't kill me, maybe next spring I will have a couple of real dogs out of the bunch. I can't remember ever being in this kind of spot. About the only positive in all this is they can scald a rabbit. I would also be willing to bet they will scald about anything on 4 legs. I've been wondering why if I call my friends they don't answer. I guess they are afraid I am wanting to go hunting with them and bring some of these yahoos with me. I remember when my dad was alive and I used to talk to him about a problem I had to face. It seems like he always gave me the same answer ( Don't worry about it boy work your way through it, it'll build character.) Well I guess I'll take the old man's advice and just work my way through it, but I sure could use some help. So maybe somebody out there can help out. This job wouldn't pay much and I can't promise we would get a lot of rabbit to eat but I bet you would be in good shape by the end of season. Happy Hunting.

good gosh I don't think I would want to tackle that job. I'd give it a shot but I'd probably work myself up so much I'd throw my hands up in the air and give up.......lol
I tell you one thing it sure does help to vent on here and just talk with others that have been in the same situation.

Believe me I would love to have one of my old gun dog packs back. I don't know if I am young enough to handle this crew or not. One thing about it they will keep me on my toes. I'm going to try to get a real good male from a friend of mine to hunt with them. He has too many to hunt them all this winter and I will keep him conditioned good for spring trial season. I will sure miss old Junie this year.

Bobby One thing is for sure with 5 wild pups your bound to see something you have never seen before! I did a similar thing 2 years ago sold two veteren dogs and started with 2 new ones. It was 1 step forward and 2 steps back at times!
Sounds like your gonna have a year to remember!!!

Re: And Joeyman Thinks He Has Problems!!!!!!!
I can somewhat relate. I am taking my young Annie female out next week for her 1st real hunt. She has done an awsome job at the beagle club. I couldn't be more happy with her. BUT...........I have never ran her outside of an enclosure and we are headed to Southern Ohio for the opener. Around the house she will open on squirrels so I have no doubt I'm gonna have trouble with deer.
My plan is to let her hunt, but keep her in close with me. If 1 of the other dogs jumps a rabbit I'll let her hark. Otherwise her and I will have to see a rabbit before I let her take off. I like the dog too much to lose her 3 1/2 hours away. Now, if we see a deer I'll let her take off on it. Thats what the Sportdog is for. I'd rather see it happen and mash the button than never know for sure what she's doing.
And joeyman, my Belle dog don't retrieve my rabbits. She doesn't want anything to do with them once they "quit" running. But I have yet to see anything Annie wont eat. So I'm gonna have my hands full of your kinda trouble too.
My hare hound Annie is as tough as they come. She minds me well and runs a mean rabbit, but she's a whole different breed than my Oakhill bluetick Belle dog.
lol, aint it great to be a beagler!!!!

Re: And Joeyman Thinks He Has Problems!!!!!!!
Well I have been spending the last few days just intentionally taking them into deer. If I had to pay an electric bill on the TT it would be high. I ran 3 of them this morning and the running wasn't good to say the least but I was real pleased over all with the way they handled. I had a friend with me that has a real good 5 or 6 yr. old male and I kinda used him for a measuring stick so I was happy. I will post from time to time about this bunch of renegades and I bet I will see some things this season I have never seen before. I got to thinking last night and I hope I have the same problem when I am 85 yrs. old. It's all about doing what you love and I dearly love these dogs.

Bobby,
If you have one that runs with its head up I will run it with mine after these BIG Canecutters. They run like a Deer.

They all need about 5 days of Canecutters form daylight to dark and maybe it would take some of the sap out of them.

Re: And Joeyman Thinks He Has Problems!!!!!!!
I've had so many guys get mad and argue with me that gun hunting didn't help a young dog at all. I bet I can put 30 days of gun hunting on these and they won't be the same animals. Don't get me wrong these dogs are in shape they have been running 24 hr. shifts here at the house all year but nothing will get a young dog settled in like putting hair and blood in their mouth. They know plenty about running they just aren't tuned up to handle and do it my way.

Re: And Joeyman Thinks He Has Problems!!!!!!!
I was tempted this fall to trial these young dogs and I did take one to an AKC trial. I used to have a rule to never trial anything until it had proved itself under the gun and to me that is the only way to do it. In LP trials you are constantly running in and catching dogs and I just think it messes with their mind.
