mouthy dog
new to this forum. would appreciate some advice on a mouthy 10 month old female. She will smoke a rabbit but is very mouthy when the other dogs are quiet. I run with a pack of 4 and when they're on a lose, this little 10 mo. old won't quit barking. I have had her out by herself and she does the same thing. I know she'll run the rabbit but she's creating a situation where my other dogs are not honoring each other's barks. Any advice on how to correct this would be appreciated.
mouthy
Some dogs will come out of it with a little age, and others will stay that way. Is she cold trailing? If so start taking her out late in the day when their isn't as much scent. I had one that was this way as a pup, but gradually came out of it as she got older, she could always jump and run a nice rabbit, but the extra mouth was killing me. I almost culled her a couple of times, but I am glad I didn't she has turned into a top notch rabbit dawg. I wouldn't give her forever though, if she doesn't start to come around some by the time she is 12 - 18 months then I say cut your losses.
Good Luck

On a loss is the pup reallly barking or just a yip here and there? Is she back tracking or working the check area?

I've seen a few you could run the mouth out of, at least temporarily, but generally I find it fairly rare to get one to clean up after it's been running a few months. Early on, when first started I don't pay much attention to it but after a few months she should be getting her act together. I find this to be one of those faults that tends to get worse rather than better but give her a fair chance. I had a high percentage of pups off Ranger Dan who started out mouthy but all but a couple cleaned up with a little age and maturity (and miles on the ground). Good luck with her.

We got a little 13" bitch from a popular line that was also this way, she had been run with the fast dogs from the start. She had been out sized and overmatched from the beginning, so her mouth went into gear when dropped from the truck till the time they were caught for home. We figured the reason for this and only soloed her for a long time, until she gained the experience and comfidence to do it herself(no pressure & no one to chase after). After this, she showed to be a good hound in most respects, so then we only put puppies with her(again, no pressure and no one to carry her), she realized she could lead and show the way to the pups and this greatly improved her confidence in herself. A few years latter she was sold to a hunter and his son and became their brag hound of the litle pack the hunted.
Now there are others that have this mouthiness, that there was no cause of misshandleing to create. Not all beagles born become serviceable hunting hounds...Patch

thanks
Thanks for all of the replies. To clear a few things up, the unnecessary barking is mostly at the check. It's not like she is just standing there like and idiot, she is working the check but is barking while doing it, and she doesn't have to be dead straddled over the track to bark. I did have a little bit of luck with her over the weekend. I used the chock collar on the lowest setting while she was on track to sort of " calm the madness" with all of the barking. I think it will make her think twice before barking, as long as I don't over-do it. It seemed to work this past weekend. Do you thing consistantly running her by herself would help?

I have seen it where some dogs bark in the check because they are so anxious to get the check before the other dog can get it. If you run her just by herself she may settle in and not claim before she has it. Who knows its worth a try....
hounds... hare.... hunter.... bang... what gets better than that.

Have a 9 month old male that i think may have to much mouth. The dog will start mouthing and i would say about half the time he starts a rabbit at least when i can see him. We have been runnin in corn fields so on a loss i can hear him get a check but sometime i think the dog that chimed in got the chech maybe he was just babblin...going to possibly hang on through huntin season then evaluate....out of pretty popular line...About tired of gettin field trial blood i think im better off just getting a good pup out of a good huntin dog. lol
