Antenna for Astro
Wondering what is the best long range antenna for the Astro, the long range handheld,or the roof mount truck antenna. Al
Re: Antenna for Astro
I've got the standard and long range ant. but the roof mount truck antenna beat both for long range.

Re: Antenna for Astro
You might want to take a look at Conkeys website. I replaced my Dc30 antenna with their tuff skin antenna and also replaced my Astro antenna with their 8`` antenna. I don`t lose signal any more with any of my collars now. I hunt some very thick stuff. I can usually pick up signal to about 1.5 to 1.8 miles. Sometimes I turn a dog loose into the soybeans and then go somewhere else and hunt my other dogs.My set up doesn`t let me down.

Re: Antenna for Astro
i recommend the handheld for several reasons.
first-last season we hunt coons with a guy who is in a wheel chair,he never leaves the truck and we all run garmins.he can hear the hound and see its location on the garmin.well his roof mount attenna started acting up,may have been from getting whacked by a tree branch cause we drive into some pretty rough stuff, anyway,i let him borrow my handheld after his crapped out.he said it worked better on range and he since has ordered one.
second-you can carry the handheld with ya.these garmins still lose range due to terrain and the handheld helps save me a trip over the hillside most times to see the packs progress.
we tested the hand held by putting a collar in a tree branch.we got 2.1 miles(started losing signal at 1.85) with the regular set up.
roofmount was connected to another astro unit with the same collar programmed into it and we got 3.75 mile.when its signal went out it never came back on.
we had the third astro hooked up to the handheld and got 4.85 before it lost signal, when we stopped driveing its signal came back on until we hit 5.12 miles.
now these were taken from the collar not moving,i dont think these ranges would be possible if a dog was wearing it running around and moving in and out of cover but it clearly showed me the handheld works better than the roof mount
i wont buy one,you can buy an extra wire for the handheld from garmin and wire it through your vehicles firewall in a minute and cable wrap it ro the attenna or something else
