I was sent this letter with my county dog tag renewal information. I take it to mean that if I continue to register as a "kennel" then I have to get a vendors licence and submit every dog transaction to the State Of Ohio. I have thought about registering it as a business to take the tax deduction however according to this letter, deductions are no longer acceptable on domestic pets supplies.
Curious if anyone else received this letter.....the only reason I register as a "kennel" is to save a few bucks per year on registration fees because a kennel licence is $60 and a single dog is $12...I normally have more than 5 dogs at any given time throughout the year.

i quit buying them... easy as that.. i give them enough of my money...!!! and until they start repremanding the worthless people around me letting there @#$%eaters run loose and ripping through my trash and chasing my cattle im not paying it lol... i quit paying it two years ago and have no intentions of doing it again.. thats the whole problem with this country... there are too many rules and regulations and too many idiots making new ones up that have no buisness doing it!!!
Especially when they either can't or won't enforce the rules that are already on the books. I could go on for days about that one but the short and sweet of it that I see is they make more rules and regulations that either ask for or take more and more of our money to try to make up for the lack of income from the laws they already don't enforce to begin with. Cut out the fat, streamline the program or whatever it is and then work on making that work before adding more crap on the backside of it.

I seriously considered this as I have not been checked in the 12 years I have lived at this location. I average taking 5 to 10 stray dogs to the pound every year because people dump them at my place. The one time a mean mix breed showed up and we called the Dog Warden to take care of him...he showed up and made us feel like we were bothering him and said that we should just take the dog in since we have a kennel setup.
I don't mind sending them my $60 per year but I am not going to go get a vendors licence, collect tax, etc. I am fearful of just not sending it in since I have claimed 8/9 dogs on their form for the last 12 years. I think they will "hotspot" my house and nail me for fines because you can see my kennel setup from the road and our house dogs run loose in the yard. However, I am also fearful that they will cross-reference my kennel licence with not having a vendors licence and I will be nailed for that.
It is a total crock of bs......I want to call the number listed and explain that I am not a "professional breeder" and more of a hobbiest with a dog collecting habbit but I think ignoring the letter may be my best option until they send me another.

I read over that thing again and here's what I would do and why.
Discontinue your kennel registration because you are not professionally breeding your dogs for the purpose of hunting or selling them. I would take the "professional" part to mean for hire and you are only doing it for personal enjoyment so you would not fall under the "professional" part of that statement. I would dare them to come and find you and force you to obtain a kennel license. And as far as for having any litters down the road where some pups may end up in another person's hands.........well I would just call it a gift and remember that cash is very hard to track.
I love Uncle Sam but him and his 50 minions sure do like to put their hands in our wallets every chance they get.

I called the Auditor’s office and probably should not have but I was mad and wanted some answers to this rediculous letter. Now they have me pegged from my phone number and basically said that based on the information it constituted that I was “hunting dogs” and therefore I either needed to buy a vendor license because I could "potentially breed, buy, or sell for hunting purposes". My other option was to single register my dogs so that I am not considered a kennel. She wanted to change it in the computer but I knew it was going to cost me another $60 for her to do so because I was truthful in the number of dogs I currently have. I told her to just leave it alone, forget I ever called, and I would take my chances with the State because if they make me claim dollars then they will actually owe me money, not the other way around.
She went on again about changing it in the computer or setting me up as a vendor. I told her again that I am not in the business of selling dogs because I tried a few years ago to claim my kennel and was told it was a hobby….she then wanted to know why my dog quantity fluctuated from year to year if I am not buying and selling dogs. I told her when I buy them I assume the seller is paying their tax on the transaction and that the only dogs I keep are worthy and the rest are given away. Of course she didn’t buy that story and told me to just get a vendors license and she would transfer me to that department. I then asked her why I would need one when the state considers what I do a hobby and not a business. She said that was for me to sort out with the State….ugghhhh again!!!!
I would say I am somehow busted but I am not sure how they could ever prove that I have bought or sold any dogs. The whole thing revolves around either the local Auditor making more money on single registries, selling vendor license, or the state collecting taxes. The whole dang thing pisses me off....I should have crumpled the paper and forgot about it.

This is another of those examples that I love. The letter of the law says one thing but common sense is dictating otherwise. So you either play dumb and take your chances or try to follow the law and get screwed.

this was my whole point... the people making up these ridiculous rules lack any sense at all. i think they just have people sitting in a little cubicle thinking up something they can charge for to make a dollar for them... its getting old! so if your dogs are a hobby how can they tax you or charge you on a hobby if they say you cant deduct it.. doesnt make any sense! these taxes and fees have gone wayyyy to far in every state not just in ohio.. ohiohuntr, i live on the county line so im in a weird spot. half of my property is in one county and the other is in the bottom county so not very many people know the line so i dont get any visits lol. i keep my dogs behind my barn and horse arena out of view anyway so unless there at my barns you would never know i owned a dog lol. i like it that way.!!! i still feel your frustration though. governing bodies just continue to take and take off normal people. my gosh, charging me for having dogs???? come on!!!
I guess what ticks me off the most is that I have followed the rules to a T and yet I now find out I am still wrong and they want more money from me. All of my other neighbors have never bought a dog tag in their life!!! Yes, I feel like a sucker right now because I have paid $720 to the county just to own the dogs I paid for, buy feed for, and care for yet now they want me to double that amount because I have been honest.
I seriously want to take this to the state level but I know I will just be defeated because I am wrong in the written law.

i had a kennel license until two years ago when they started this crap.....if you have a kennel license you can be inspected at anytime as well. So, i dropped it and just started purchasing single tags. I live in franklin county and can only have 5 dogs licensed at a time, so it only cost me $64 a year. All hunting dogs are $12 each. There is so many cheese holes in these laws that you can argue until your blue in the face. I'm also looking into an LLC, but if my dogs fall under "personall property", why would you need a vendor license to have personal property?
I agree with you: "if your dogs are a hobby how can they tax you or charge you on a hobby if they say you cant deduct it"

No bluecollar it makes sense to them. They figured out there are guys like Ohiohntr out there not paying their "fair share". It saves him money to register as a kennel as opposed to registering each dog individually. And since they are not making any sales tax money on his sales because he is not an actual business they are in turn not making up for the lost revenue on that end either. So by forcing all people with a kennel that they deem qualify as a business they then force them to register as a vendor and pay their additional taxes, fees or whatever. If he chooses not to do that then he gets to pay to individually register each of his dogs which in turn costs him more money. They see it as a way of getting the "right" amount with no consideration for those of us doing things like this as a hobby. They've gotta have their hands into everything just to try to afford to pay for the stuff we don't need..............and the few things we do.

They are proposing something similar in WV but the amount of dogs you have to own to be considered a professional breeder make alot more sense. Still taking away rights!
